Hey Reid,
I hope I can be of some help.
I have a super twangy guitar.
A Strat or Tele with single coil pickups is what you are after.
The setting between bridge and middle is sensational.
Once you have that going on you need to nail a good right hand technique. The best reference I would give you is to learn some Jerry Reed material. He was particularly aggressive with his right hand and while it is a little tricky to emulate his style, even halfway there will do the job.
So grab your strat/tele and sit down and learn 'Jerrys' Breakdown'.
I would say go for something single coiled but I think the key is compression.
You need something to even up the volume across the strings in my opinion and as PeterG said play agressively with your right hand - Try out some Albert Lee stuff. ..
