Improv Game
Okay so I was thinking of fun things to do with a band. And from playing in a really good trio where we play original fusion/jazz/odd time stuff as well as standards, I thought wouldn’t it be fun to have a structured free improv based on a game.
So here is the game…
Number 12 pieces of paper 1 through 12. And put them into a hat, or what have you…
1. First grab 1 number. This number dictates how many different notes are used in the improvisation. Say for example you pull out “5”
2. Now put the 5 back in the bag, and pick 5 numbers. The numbers correlate with the notes starting on C. So…
1.C
2.C#/Db
3.D
4.D#/Eb
5.E
6.F
7.F#
8.G
9.G#/Ab
10.A
11.A#/Bb
12.B
- So let’s say we pick 4,3,10,8,then 9 so the notes available are Eb,D,A,G,G#, or if you prefer it in order..DEbGG#A
3. An option….Pull 1 number for time signature…example 9 so in 9/8 or 9/4.
Another option is to Pick the number of notes (example “5”) then pick 1 number for the key, say “3 or D” then pick 5 numbers, say 13579, then relate those back to the key, so the notes are; DEF#G#A#
Anyways, Just another way to be creative, I guarantee there’ll be some interesting stuff happening.
*remember there is also the possibility of getting 12 notes, so that would be chromatic, then there is the also the possibility of 1 note, which could be interesting trying to make it interesting.
-Another variation is to let everyone pick their own numbers, so one person might only be able to play CEbG# and A in 5/4, then another is C#DF#A#B in 3/4 and then another only get’s G in 9/4.
So what you think, have some fun….
BTW feel free to try it by yourself, it’s a good time….
Cool Bit similar to a 12 note row if you've ever had a go at composing with one of those, you can get some very 'interesting' sounding phrases and melodies going.
