Just a quick question regarding 7 or 8 finger tapping right-hand technique. I am just starting to work this into my practice regime and I want to get it right.
When tapping with the fingers of your right hand, do you "pull" off the string (i.e., up from the floor) or "push" away (down towards the floor) to produce the note? I've experimented and it seems possible both ways, but I was wondering if there is an advantage or consensus either way?
Honestly, i prefer to push down when attempting any kind of multi-finger tapping. One of the only advantages that i can see to this is that when you push down, the strings under your left hand are muted by that fretting hand. If you pull up, i find it more likely to hit the lower strings.
I'm sure there probably more advantages/disadvantages, but tapping and pulling-off in a downward motion feels more natural to me. _________________ "He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. I 'push' with all my fingers except the right hand pinkie, which I pull upwards. This is due to it being shorter than my other fingers, otherwise I would just use the same technique for all 8 fingers.
Besides, your fretting hand pulls downwards, so it's only logical to use the same method for the tapping hand.

Well, that's where my confusion came from because I don't agree that it necessarily follows.
When pulling off with the left hand, we pull "down", with the fingers curling towards the palm of the hand, because this motion feels naturally stronger and more controlled. It would seem more logical to me to do the same with the right hand when tapping. This would mean pullling "up".
Bottom line is, I would love to know how Guthrie does it because he's the yardstick of perfect technique as far as I'm concerned.
