Well, it's about time! But, hey, this is indeed big news. Guitar Player is still America's leading guitar magazine and the one with the most mainstream pedigree. So, for Guthrie to be recognized enough to be voted as Best New Talent by the readers of such a mainstream and somewhat conservative and institutionalized magazine does signal that Guthrie has indeed arrived and that he's now well on his way to a most promising career. Thanks to all of you Guthrie fans for spreading the word. This recognition has mainly been through the word of mouth of you fans although we have to agree that Guthrie's a rather easy sell, isn't he? And, congrats to you, Guthrie! You surely deserve this award and I'm confident that this will only be the first of many in the years ahead. You're only getting started.

Congrats Guthrie! Finally, some serious recognition for his amazing talents. _________________ "He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him a spinal cord would fully suffice." - Albert Einstein

gg's got talent. i agree congrats!
but look at that list! it's as if gp's current readers didn't listen to any music outside the charts or newer than 30 years!
the downwards spiral of gp is a fact. just compare the mag to the radical and infpormative magazine of mid-late eightes (where i discovered sonic youth, jah wobble, buckethead, sonny landreth, henry kaiser, wayne krantz, joe diorio, mick goodrich, meat puppets, swans) to the, quote ed, "mainstream and somewhat conservative and institutionalized magazine" there is today. geez!
apart from guthrie the poll could almost have been from any year . . . it seems like gp has the readers it deserves. gp was mainstream and institutionlized 20 years ago as well, with gw covering the more commersial trend stuff (but in a good way i'd say), but it was still a place of discovery, critique and openmindedness.
sorry 'bout the rant, cause i'm happy for gg, but the poll is just silly. it has always been i guess, but it used to be a kind of thermometer . . .
.
I totally concur with what you're saying and I only flip through the GP issues I get at the office every month to see what the ads are like, but like I said in the earlier post, I just would not have thought that Guthrie would even have been on the radar of most GP readers or those who would have participated in such a poll. When I first heard this news, I thought, "Huh??? Really??? " And it certainly would have been a write-in, not a multiple choice question kind of thing, so I do think it's significant. Heck, I certainly would not have given a squat about such a poll.
The other names may be old hat, but I'd have to say most of them are indeed still quite active and are certainly highly respected in most cases. As for Lifeson, Rush was active the past few years, so that's my take on that. I wouldn't know much about metal but I guess Zakk Wylde is about as mainstream as a metal guitarist gets and is still a better choice than Kirk Hammett or that guy in Dragonforce. Metheny and Beck I love dearly (certainly two of my five or so favorites) and you can't really argue with choices like Emmanuel, Bonamassa, and Landreth. I'm not going to comment on categories I really know little about.
i agree that for gg this is significant. look at the company he keeps!
now, my problem with the poll wasn't the specific artists winning the different categories. well, lifeson, beck, torn, carlton etc are like, half-gods! but it's almost like the voters are non-musicians . . . like asking my mother: "name me a great blues/rock/jazz player" . . . the results are pedestrian.
sharon isbin is an astonishing guitarist, but probably one out of three classical players that people not tuned in to the 'classical' scene know about. there are many others . . .
to me, it seems like it's mainly voters voting about genres or music they don't really know much about, and just grab a name they feel is a safe bet. and that actually makes it more interesting for guthrie wise: it's now common knowledge that he's the shit!

With every muso in Chelmsford claiming to have known Guthrie before he won guitarist of the year - I don't doubt it
Ironically most musos in Chelmsford have probably had a word at some stage _________________ Fabulous powers were revealed to me the day I held my magic Suhr(d) aloft and said "by the power of great scale!"
