Great Thread.
I love the way Guthrie plays with authority, that's definitely a big part of his sound. His fingers have the same sense of "confidence" or "6th Sense" I see in Eric Johnson's approach.
I'd like to see Guthrie do a short youtube type demo showing how he sets the dials on his Cornfords, that would be VERY interesting and informative!
Has anyone out there heard Guthrie using a Cornford Carrera? I currently own one and would be interested to see how he would set the dials on one of these little beauties...
Cheers

While we're on the subject of rigs (simple, not-so-simple, and really complex), here's an example of probably the most stupendously complex rig I've seen to date. This is Dweezil Zappa's rig for his upcoming Zappa Plays Zappa tour.

Click on the PDF's for the signal flowchart, layouts, run list (routing of each of the devices), etc. I dunno. I don't get it. I guess my question would be: why? But to each his own, I guess... _________________ Ed Yoon

yeah, i saw that last week. why? is a good question. because he can afford a few techs to run the stuff for him, is one answer i guess. on the other hand, if i was in that position, i'd sure want something that i could overlook and that felt secure. lots of stuff that can go wrong there.
dz has always been a gear hond though. he's had access to everything he'd want and much more from day one.
and more important: i really like him as a guitar player.
the new rig is just stupid though. (ME WANT! )

Good luck diagnosing the fault when his signal cuts out halfway through a gig
That rig is just stupendous. |

I, too, like it Guitar --> Amplifier.
If there's anything between it would be Delay\Chorus. |

I think that 97% of guitar players use effects to cover up bad playing--even if they don't realize that is why they are using the effects. My teacher used to tell me that--and it scared me away from pedals, but now I'm glad I never got into them. I do use an octave pedal time to time and I have a talk box, but thats about it. I also think its better to make your sound personal in your fingers rather than in your equipment--that way no one can copy you. I love players like Guthrie who add in small bends and funny vibratos to make notes come alive, give them real voice and feeling. |
