Firstly, pain is your body telling you something is not right.
In your situation I would see a guitar teacher and get him to go through the mechanics of alternate picking with you. _________________ Fabulous powers were revealed to me the day I held my magic Suhr(d) aloft and said "by the power of great scale!"

It may be a sign that you need to take a break from alternate picking. Then again if it is only slight pain, it's a sign that your muscles are developing and not being damaged. But if it is unpleasant in the slightest in any way, defo take a break. You might be pushing too hard, or for too long. |

i've had (and to some extent has) what sounds as the exact same symptom.
make SURE you're ALWAYS 100% RELAXED when playing. do NOT continue to play if it hurts or if you tense up (which yo do if it hurts anyway). practice something else, legato tapping, whatever.
practice picking slow and totally relaxed.
off course make sure your grip and hand/arm positions aren't messed up.
but basically, do not tense up. rest. practice relaxing while playing.
find a specialist if these suggestions don't help. (ask someone at a music academy for pointers on godd doctors or physiotherapists.)
good luck.

in some cases when you play really fast alternate picking you forget to play with the wrist, and instead you use your whole forearm which causes your upper arme to vibrate and also the shoulder. I used to do so (not anymore) and it hurts very much in a very strange way. maybe that is what you've done?
You should aim at ALWAYS playing with your wrist unless you really know what you're doin' so you won't grow any bad habbits:D |

If you're in pain and you're not sure why my first course of action is always to get it checked out professionally by an MD.
Its quite probably attributable to any one of the suggestions above but there's no point in making a minor injury into something long term because you ignored it - I did that when I first started playing and regretted it |
