So, it's now been 2 and a bit years since Erotic Cakes was released....
Does anyone know what Guthrie's next plans are? EC seemed to be 10 years in the making, so should we expect to wait for a bit before we see any new solo release?
If you look at other players in the field (Vai, Satch, etc), they tend to release a new album every few years.....It would be weird if he only released one solo album when there's clearly the potential and demand for so many more.
Thoughts? |

Ted Greene released one album.
Miles Davis released one album.
Charlie Drake released one album.
All the greats only released one album. The reason they only released one album is because they wanted to give space to emerging artists... Miles Davis nurtured Herbie Hancock, John Scofield, Mike Stern, Yngwie Malmstein, Victor Wooten, Jaco Pastorius, Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Chick Corea and so other albums are about them - the people he shared the stage with.
Charlie Drake just couldn't see a way of following "Hello my Darlings" and developed an addiction to Pez that eventually saw him eating them straight out of the wrapper rather than puttinh them in a dispenser and eating them from a dispenser. It must have been horrible being trapped so early in his career by a set of tunes he grew to hate.
Ted's story is the saddest, he spent most of the 80s being compared to teen-wolf after the cover of Chord Chemistry saw him in complete hirsuit acceptance. In the years following 9/11 he was persecuted for once having a beard and getting a lesson with him involved reenacting the first 3 minutes and 34 seconds of any A Team episode complete with car chase and a Military Police car capsizing into a stack of Boxes.
Some bands or individuals talk about making albums or changing their style or keeping the band together. I think Guthrie's focus is music for him; not acceptance from us. So if he finds things that are more fun we'll just have to wait ... or occupy ourselves until it happens. _________________ Fabulous powers were revealed to me the day I held my magic Suhr(d) aloft and said "by the power of great scale!"

I think Guthrie's got some sketches of new tunes and he sounded like he'd really like to start working on it, but he's just been too busy (now touring in Italy) to really sit down and focus on it without distractions. Hopefully, Guthrie will have the time to get this done sometime in '09. _________________ Ed Yoon

I'm adamant that I'm right. At this stage in the 60s Miles Davis had invented the Miles Davis Franchise and as such people were playing all over the world in Miles Davis Quartets, Miles Davis Sextets, Miles Davis Quintets and Miles Davis Quartets.
In A Silent Way was Lester Corncrake on Sax, Bitches Brew was Dexter Corduroy - who later rose to fame playing the evocative dissonant music for the TV Show Rhoobarb and Custard ... specifically the music behind Custards Sarcastic jibes and also when Rhoobarb was in a slough of despondency.
People try to believe that it's the same man in all instances, but that's why Davis turned up on stage and refused to acknowledge his audience... he played and every time appeared to reinvent himself. After his death the MDFMG decided to not take on more franchise holders and slowly the numbers dwindled till they were left with none.
There was a wiki page for this but it's been taken down since my account was banned. _________________ Fabulous powers were revealed to me the day I held my magic Suhr(d) aloft and said "by the power of great scale!"

This draws interesting parallels with Charlie Parker who was instrumental in the development of cabinet-grade plywood as a viable material for bespoke furniture production. Some say he was cheated out of his share of the vast fortune which such a development would undoubtedly bring, hastening his decline into drug-dependency, whilst others close to Bird have claimed that he gave his time and knowledge freely, simply for the enjoyment of gluing and clamping. What's certain is that, without such visionaries as Miles Davis and Charlie Parker, the world of home improvement would be very different today. |

You're both clearly crazy.
This time in the 60s the government were really coming down hard on any forms of expression especially the concept of naming your children after DIY goods... Ornate Coving, John Coat-rail and Phine-grade Sanders are two Jazz musicians that readily spring to mind. _________________ Fabulous powers were revealed to me the day I held my magic Suhr(d) aloft and said "by the power of great scale!"

Don't forget Ella Fitzkitchens and Count Homebasie, and the great organ player Richard 'tongueandgroove' Holmes. |
