Just signing in as something of a lurker - although I have played guitar in the past its been some 16 years since an injury which stopped me playing and while I am considering making the effort to start again, I'm very much waiting for inspiration before taking the plunge - thats where this forum (and others like it) hopefully come in.
Back then (as a child of the 80's ) I listened to a lot of the really serious contemporary guitarists (Becker, Friedman, Lane, Vai, Petrucci etc etc) and had a fair amount of chops (didn't we all? ;p ) but few opportunities to play with a band.
Took a few lessons with Shawn Baxter and Phil Hilborne (did a couple of courses at GIT) and while I had a "road map" for things to study to really improve (many thanks to Phil Hilborne - the man is a total legend) I never really got to grips with that regime before my accident and ended up selling all my gear shortly afterwards - being convinced I wouldn't play again (I can't use my fourth finger to any great extent, and my third is intermittent.......I'm no Django however ^^).
Now, I'm far more open minded and listening to somewhat simpler, although heavier bands - to put it in terms of gear back then I used an RG550 Ibanez and a Carvin DC200 with scalloped necks, and the ubiquitous JCM900 Stack....before swapping to a Triaxis/midi setup....now, I'd be happy with a Neck-through, fixed bridge 7 String (Carvin, ESP, Schecter, I'm not fussy) and perhaps a line6 Vetta for some variety of tones.
Anyway!! nice to be here - its a wonderful forum. |
