whats the thing guthrie always has behind the nut of his guitar and what's the purpose? I know andy james uses a smaller elastic looking thing in front of his nut but what good would it do behind the nut? And also where can I get both of these things? |

First off, welcome to the GG Forum. Good to have you here.
The hairband is something Guthrie uses (in front of the nut) only when he's doing 7-8 finger tapping kinds of stuff (like the chorus on 'Sevens'). So he only uses it maybe 5% of the time or less. I say that using that for "normal" kinds of playing is cheating! _________________ Ed Yoon

blue ones are on the bassy side, while yellow ones i've heard are a bit trebly. everything else should be fine though.

The key is color coordination. The color of the hairband should not clash with the color scheme of the guitar. That's Guthrie's secret formula. _________________ Ed Yoon

If you look at some of the videos from bluesjamtracks, it looks like he has a velcro type string muter.
For this, just use the velcro straps that typically come with long power adaptors (ie laptops) or something similar. Use the felt end to mute the string. The velcro just makes it easy to come off and on the guitar without having to stretch the hairband over the headstock. |

Honestly, saying that a hairband is cheating is completely ridiculous! There is no cheating in music! if there is, go and complain about all those people that make electronic music using programs a baby could use! The hairband on Govans' guitar is less of a cheat than the one holding his hair back! (when he wears it)
In fact why not complain about that! cos when his hair his held back he can see what he's doing better! Oh my god that's cheating he's not allowed to do that!
And furthermore - lol! |

I applied a hairband to my neck and suddenly I'm railing out that live improv solo from drum and bacharach
Btw, hairbands aren't that great. Most of them fail to hug the strings evenly
What I do is buy black socks with a thick elasticated band at the top then cut the top band off with a pair of scissors.
You can adjust the size/tightness to the neck using lots of things, split pins, cable ties, a stapler, your mother. Whatever.
It mutes better and looks slick (black band on black guitar) |
