I'm curious as to whether or not Guthrie anchors his pinky when alternate picking. It seems like sometimes i've seen him do it and others it appears as though he has the free floating approach, anyone know for sure?

Both, it depends on how he's thinking.
Like the amount of hybrid plucked notes causes the hand to be mounted differently.
If this topic is for your own benifit then don't worry about it. Just kep playing and expanding your boundaries and you will find yourself behaving the same way, ie; sometimes anchoring, sometimes not.
