Hi.

I have one question... why guthrie hold the pick with his index finger when he is using fingerpicking technique? which are the benefits in your opinion?

Guess it's just a preference. Mattias Eklundh does this too. I like using my middle finger, 'cause I can control my index better.

It is a thing he does just as a means to store his pick. What he does is he has it stored in the crook of the index finger so that it is a smooth transtiton between things with a pick and hybrid picking. He also does this with tapping. It really is only a means to store his pick, different players do it different ways, for instance I know that Paul Gilbert stores it in the palm of his hand and taps with his first finger, it's a horses for course kinda thing =)

The thumb gives a softer attack on the res notes.

Storing the pick like that isn't a technical choice but Guthrie cant be bothered to put it on his desk/knee. You can tell this since he always hybrid picks with the pick and fingers so it must be a tonal choice to tuck it away

i think his point is "why in the first finger"

when guthrie does it he completely removes the option of using the finger

i tuck my pick away in the 2nd finger, but it still functions as a finger, i can still use it to play lines, guthrie doesnt do this

my bet is that its the way hes always done it, everyone has little idosyncracies in their playing that they usualy picked up when working on something without guidance
