I didn't see this mentioned on the site so I'm assuming it's brand-new news.
I was at a clinic with acoustic guitarist extraordinaire Clive Carroll (who has been referred to as the 'acoustic Guthrie Govan', Check him out) just on saturday. And without doubt the most interesting thing he said, non-playing related, was that he has just recieved the commision to compose a piece for electric guitar and orchestra.
The reason this is relavent is that the guitarist he has lined up to play the guitar section is none other than GG. This has me hugely excited as it's the first time I'm aware of that these two will have released anything together.
The details he mentioned are a bit fuzzy given my poor memory but I do remember him saying that it will be 'conversations between guitar and orchestra' and 'not the Yngwie thing'. I think the piece is due to be be played and recorded at an english music festival around april time (like I said the exact details are a bit fuzzy for me) and that it will be recorded and released afterwords.
thoughts and feelings? |

thanks for the update.
potentially earth shattering.
assuming guthrie wouldn't do anything kitschy (like the yngwie stuff, and partly vai as well), this could be very interesting.
depends on the material though.
guys like scott johnson, dominic frasca and david lang has done cool contemporary stuff that i like. i just don't care for 'imaginary soundtrack' type of impressionistic neoclassic blah blah.
this could be so cool.

Thank the Almighty!
Seriously, this sounds very, very interesting. I've never heard an electric guitar-and-orchestra piece that was even decent, so I'm really looking forward to seeing and hearing what Guthrie can do. You know he'll put a lot of thought into this and look at it from all angles. So much will depend on the composition and the arrangements/orchestration, so there'll definitely be things that are not directly under Guthrie's control. _________________ Ed Yoon

Clive Carroll is an astounding guitarist and musician. I trust him to do a great job.
He also said it won't be out of this worldly technical as the orchestra (and possibly Guthrie?) will be more or less sight reading on the day. |

I'll have to check that out sometime. I've always felt the distorted electric guitar sound doesn't mesh very well with an orchestra. Or the orchestra backing would often sound like dull New Age-ish synth patches. I'm sure there are exceptions; just haven't heard or seen anything that ever made me go, "Wow!" _________________ Ed Yoon

+1. it's like the use of an 'orchestra' somehow would excuse for bland, kitschy, cliché-ridden pseudo soundtracks from new age or animal life documentary hell.
BUT ... there are many kinds of music, and it all has a place.

I was lucky enough to get to see Vai and the Metropole Orchestra's first performance in Amsterdam in 2004, was one of the best live performances I've ever attended. Sound was IMMENSE. Just love the epic sound of an Orchestra.
Vai always sees himself more of a composer I suppose, Zappa influence and all that, so he approached it in that way rather than guitar player with orchestra.
But I am a Vai fan and the fact a bunch of us got to hang out with Mr Vai and Pia Vai backstage after the show, where the beer was free, may be clouding my judgement!! _________________ Cheers

i would have loved to be there. there's definitely some great stuff done with the metropole. some of it feels less urgent though. why not write new music for an orchestra? (a ? of money i guess.) the arragements of some of the stuff doesn't really add anything (well, if you're in the room when they're playing, it's a different story).
keneally's solo piano arrangements though are really great. check put gary husbands solo piano renditions of holdsworth tunes as well. great stuff.
as a composer, vai hasn't done anything more interesting than what he did during the 80's imho. ("chronic insomnia", "there's something dead in here", "greasy kid's stuff", "bledsoe bluvd", "little pieces of seaweed").
not that the post fire garden vai is anything but greatness. it's just that he lost me while gaining new fans. give me "eat 'em and smile any day!"
