Posted: Thu Apr 21, 2011 11:23 pm Post subject: Guthrie's Session with The Aristocrats Getting Started |
|
|
I'm at the Planet10 Studios in Chicago right now helping Guthrie get set up for the recording session with the new super power trio called The Aristocrats featuring Guthrie on guitar, Marco Minnemann on drums and Bryan Beller on bass. The session will run through April 30 and the album will consist of 3 tracks each from each member. It'll be more like a "live in the studio" type of recording with a minimal of overdubs. I'm here just through Saturday to get the gear set up and help dialing in the guitar sounds. Here are some pics from the first day:
Here's the list of Guthrie's gear for this session:
GUITARS:
Suhr Guthrie Govan Signature Antique Modern (Basswood body with Maple top, Roasted Maple neck)
Suhr Guthrie Govan Signature Modern (Mahogany body with Maple top, Mahogany neck with Pau Ferro board)
Rasmus Guthrie Govan Signature Model prototype (Mahogany body, Mahogany neck with Rosewood board)
All guitars are equipped with the Suhr SSH+ humbucker in the bridge, the ML single-coil in the middle, and the SSV humbucker in the neck.
AMPS & CABS:
Suhr Badger 30 watt head
Custom Audio Amplifiers PT100 head (designed, manufactured, and distributed by Suhr)
Suhr 2x12 cabinet with Celestion Heritage G12-65 speakers
Custom Audio Amplifiers 4x12 cabinet with WSG Veteran 30 speakers
EFFECTS:
In order in the signal chain:
Peterson Strobo-Stomp Tuner
Sweet Sound MojoVibe
Xotic Robotalk Envelope Filter
Analog Man Clone Chorus
Dunlop Jerry Cantrell Signature Cry-Baby Wah
Ernie Ball Volume Pedal
Radial Swithbone (A/B box to run both amps at one or switch between them)
Suhr Koko Boost (clean and midrange boost pedal) - for the Badger 30 head only
Eventide Time Factor Digital Delay (in the effects loop of the CAA PT100)
Analog Man Sun Face Fuzz (on standby for use on certain tracks)
Guthrie's trying out the Switchbone that's in the studio to run both amps at the same time to see if he can get a big sound mixing the two amps and cabs. Sounded really good on its own through the studio monitors but they'll still need to tweak a bit and hear things in the mix to get a real good idea.
The tunes are pretty killer - intense with a lot of twists and turns but still melodic and quite listenable. It'll be very interesting to see what kind of brew comes out in the end. _________________ Ed Yoon

Here are some more pics taken by a pro photographer at the studio chronicling this session. Marco is arriving on Sunday after finishing up a short tour with Eddie Jobson so Guthrie and Bryan are working on the arrangements right now.

He was just testing the rig yesterday so he needed to be standing up to stomp on all the pedals and tweak the amps. But, that being said, he does like to play standing up as it's more natural that in terms of where the guitar is compared to sitting down. Well, it's supposed to be a "live in the studio" sort of album so I'm sure playing standing up will add to that vibe! _________________ Ed Yoon

I heard there might be some live streaming kind of thing happening at the studio like the project that Marco did with Jordan Rudess at this studio back in December. I'll ask Jimmy Johnson, the studio owner, about it and see what's going on. _________________ Ed Yoon

Here are a few more pics from today. Bryan and Guthrie are still rehearsing the parts and tweaking their sounds. Tomorrow they're setting up the drums for Marco's arrival on Sunday. It seems learning certain sections of Marco's tunes have been the most challenging task for Bryan and Guthrie.

That Antique Modern is his main axe right now and it may end up being the only guitar used on the entire album. He really loves it.
As for The Aristocrats tour in Europe, we're shooting for late-fall, early-winter. _________________ Ed Yoon

This is what the June West Coast looks like at the moment with a couple of dates still pending. These are the ones that are booked:
June 18 Sat 8PM - Wild West Guitars' Voodoo Lounge - Riverside, CA
June 19 Sun 6PM - Alva's Showroom - San Pedro, CA
June 21 Tue 9PM (two sets) - The Baked Potato
June 22 Wed 9PM (two sets) - The Baked Potato
June 24 Fri 8PM (two sets) - Biscuits & Blues - San Francisco, CA
We're still looking to book another date in the Bay Area on June 25 and there's a possibility that we'll have another gig at Alva's on June 20 but we'll see. _________________ Ed Yoon

We've got a photo documentary for now.
Some more pics from the session... The floor got messier and messier as we put more toys laying around the studio to experiment with, including a vintage Maestro Phaser, an MXR Flanger, and Durham Electronics Sex Drive that mated particularly well with CH2 of the PT100. We brought out the Riot as well to test with CH1 of the PT and that sounds great as expected, but I expect Guthrie's main sound on this album to be the Badger 30 with a Koko Boost with the midrange side engaged with the Suhr 2x12 with the WSG version of the G12-65's.
Now, this is Rock and Roll!
A good view of the settings on the amp.

Now here are some pro shots taken by Rob Olewinski who works at the studio and also does a lot of freelance photography in the Chicago area:

There's a good reason why gear and sounds are often not on top of Guthrie's priority list before a gig or a session. He is focused on playing the stuff properly and he isn't playing 'Mary Had A Little Lamb' or 'Mustang Sally'!
Here's a pic of the chart for one of Marco's tunes that has been a real challenge for both Guthrie and Bryan although I believe they've finally gotten a hang of it. Note the 11/16 time signature that shifts to 3/4 and back to 11/16 as well as a section in 4/4. There'll be all kinds of weird time sigs all over this album. And, yes, although there'll be no vocals on this album it may still get the Parental Advisory warning sticker based on the title of this tune!
