Does anyone know anything about the guitar behind Guthrie in this video?

It looks like a 24-fret Charvel Strat.

Could it that Charvel and Guthrie are working on a 2nd signature model?

I talked to Guthrie about this guitar a few days ago during NAMM and he said that it's a 22-fret neck with the same neck profile and fingerboard radius as on the GG 24-fret sig guitar with three single-coils and the same bridge on a full-sized Strat body with the neck heel cutaway.

Guthrie has found that he needs a "Strat" with three single-coils for certain applications and this guitar is essentially a Fender-made Strat although it has the Charvel logo on it. It's not likely to become a signature model at this point in time. It's a "prototype" that Guthrie is using to cover certain sounds that he can't get out of the GG model guitar.

It's another "experiment" that got stained with a quite attractive reddish-brown color and a subtle dark burst hue. Really nice. It started out as a normal natural but had some imperfections in the wood so Charvel decided to give this finish a try and it came out good. Guthrie likes it and that's all that matters. Here are some pics of Guthrie's rig for the Alvas shows.

It's all classic and timeless Strat headstocks now.

Victory 50 head - best sound I've heard from Guthrie yet.

A genuine Fender American Deluxe Stratocaster - if you want a real Strat sound, get a Strat. As far as I'm concerned, the Strat headstock is the only headstock that looks right on the Strat body. Nothing else looks right to me. I played this for a bit and it's very nice with a beautiful metallic sunburst finish.

Guthrie's set list with notes for each guitar is used for each tune

Two new additions that couldn't find room on the pedalboard but are being used at the shows

Well, actually, I hadn't seen Guthrie in person since nearly a year ago so we still have some catching up to do. Smile He's had a very, very busy tour schedule over the past year with the Aristocrats and Steven Wilson - mainly in Europe and Asia.

I spent the weekend in San Pedro to catch two of the Alvas residency shows of the new material that the band will start tracking at Sunset Sound on 2/4 Wed, which is the day after tomorrow. I will be at the studio that day and hang out there at least a few more days later on.

As the label manager of Boing Music LLC, the Aristocrats' record label, I'm obviously very involved with all the business aspects of what the band is doing. I'm also Guthrie's US manager under my own consulting and management business umbrella and I arranged Guthrie's upcoming US/Canada clinic tour. So, yes, there's always a lot to discuss whenever he and I get together even if most of our conversations aren't exactly business-related. Smile

That new finish is quite interesting. I wonder if that is the change hinted at in the Chip and Guthrie interview.

Hey Ed,

Thanks for posting this.

Speaking of the signature guitar, what's with this black thingy around the bridge on GG's #1? Is that a midi pickup?

Hey Petros,

Yes, that is indeed for a MIDI pickup from Fishman that he's been experimenting with. It's called TriplePlay Wireless Guitar Controller. Here's the link for more info:

http://www.fishman.com/products/view/tripleplay-wireless-guitar-controller

Yes, it's wireless with a USB receiver and Guthrie said it tracks really well so if it's good enough for Guthrie it must be good enough for the rest of us mortals. Haha. Smile I'm curious and have owned guitar synths in the past but I really have no desire to play marimba sounds with the guitar anymore. Wink

No, I got the sense he's just experimenting with it for recording purposes.

Just to check: Has Guthrie's current no. 1 the same specks as the production one including the roasted basswood body?

Yes, it has the roasted body. He also advised me that he's had the chance to check out some production model units at various music stores he's visited and feels that the they're identical to the latest prototypes he has.

Cool pics! I just noticed the Xotic EP booster. Does he uses like most other people, pretty much leaving it on all the time?
