Non-guitarists, that is...
Within the jazz realm:
Herbie Hancock
Michael Brecker
Branford Marsalis
Jack DeJohnette
Billy Higgins
Gary Thomas
Antonio Sanchez
Joshua Redman
Christian McBride
essentially a lot of the jazz cats that Metheny got to play with...
Within the fusion/rock-fusion realm:
Jonas Hellborg
Victor Wooten
Dennis Chambers
Bunny Brunel
Virgil Donati
Vinnie Colauita
Billy Sheehan
Stanley Clarke
Dave Weckl
Techno/electronica/World:
Talvin Singh
Thomas Jenkinson (Squarepusher)
Autechre
Nitin Sawhney
Massive Attack
Pop/Rock:
Bjork
Prince
Radiohead
Somehow, I think Guthrie would be able to fit in his playing with artists like these and more.
Getting back into the guitar side, I think he'd be able to do something really interesting on the acoustic side with the likes of Eric Roche and Thomas Leeb. And I think he'd do well in the Trio format with John McLaughlin and Paco DeLucia, although I'd imagine that Guthrie would need to woodshed on the acoustic for quite some time to be able to hang with those masters, especially Paco, in such a format.
Electric guitar wise, it'd be cool if Guthrie did a G3 tour from the perspective of him getting wider exposure, but I don't think it'd be very interesting from an artistic or musical perspective. I think him doing something with Greg Howe would be really, really cool as long as they figured out how to complement each other and create a greater whole together rather than just trade widdly solos for extended periods of time. But as mentioned on another thread, more than one electric virtuoso on a record or on stage together really doesn't mean that it'd work out great. But Guthrie doing something with Dweezil Zappa and another great guitarist in a Frank Zappa tribute band would be a really, really cool thing. _________________ Ed Yoon

Oh yeah, i def. would like to see a Prince collab. Prince has such a commanding stage presence and it would be interesting how Guthrie would into one of his performances.
I would also like to see him up there with Jeff Beck
and of course Greg Howe would just be the ultimate for me |

me...
Only I'd lay out for about 4 hours and just watch him. Maybe ever so often I'd do one of those "Eee-aww" things like the guy in Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys used to do... |

I would like to see Guthrie playing with Paco de Lucia, Why not? It would be a good contrast I'm sure he would love it... learn one from each other. _________________ Javi |

That would indeed be great. Guthrie did mention on a questions thread here that as far as The Trio was concerned that Paco took the cake or something of that sort.
When Guthrie was over here, I had an old beat-up Fender nylon-string cutaway acoustic-electric laying around and had him give it a run. It's a nyon-string for electric and steel-string acoustic players who use a pick: narrower nut width, neck joining the body at the 14th fret instead of the 12th, lower action than typical classical guitars, etc. Guthrie immediately started burning it up with some amazing Flamenco-style runs and we were all going, "Well, it figures..." _________________ Ed Yoon

Now now Ed...
For only $400,000 you could become "clear" and then you would know the true meaning of the pastafagiolian chromatic dominant scale and how it relates to daily life and Sunday Sauce.

I found the answers in an egg and cress sandwich!
Guthrie with Kotzen - Was lucky enough to see them at a Cornford Club gig, they did a great version of Superstition by Stevie Wonder, with GG playing the clav parts on guitar.
GG with PG - I hope to see this at the IGF this year! |
