whenever I hear someone use the term 'young guitar prodigy" I tend to roll my eyes most of time. But Johan Randen, Mattias Eklundh's young protege, is definitely the exception.

check out clips from his CD, Lead Guitar....

http://www.guitar9.com/leadguitar.html

I just ordered the CD and from what I've heard so far I am extremely impressed. The tunes sound really cool and not just a boring wankfest.

even more amazing is that he was only 12 when he recorded this

Shocked

I know he is a lot more grown up now. I was watching him do a lil jam with Mattias on a Young Guitar DVD and, yes, he's definitely the real deal.

The kid's a prodigy. I've got Randy McStine's stuff, too. This Johan kid is going to be great. Cool deal! Cool

It is quite crazy to think what Johan will be capable of when he is in his 20's or 30's Shocked

Indeed, but child prodigies don't always mean that they'll really mount to much when they become adults. In fact, most child prodigies are forgotten after the novelty of being so good so young wears off. It happens all the time in classical music, jazz, and in the biz of rock guitar heroes. There are so many more factors involved in music besides technical facility and proficiency on the instrument and understanding the workings of musical forms.

Eventually they have to create, develop a style and a voice, and all these other intangibles that make a truly great player, musician, and artist. There are 6~7 year old child prodigies in classical music who will blow our doors off with their proficiency on the piano, violin, or whatever. But it's very possible that somebody starting at the age of 12 or 13 could be more proficient and better all-around musicians than those prodigies by the time they all reach 25. We see it happen all the time.

I definitely agree with u Ed, very well put.

I think out of all the young guitar players I've heard about, Johan indeed has the most potential to be truly amazing.

Apparently Steve Vai's protegé Thomas Rocklin is back in the UK working in a music shop in Newcastle.. alledgedly.

Well, that's a good prime example of "Whatever happened to...?" I thought the whole thing was bit of a publicity circus anyway.
