While living in the UK from 2000-2003, I had the honor of seeing Guthrie live down at a Tone Merchant sponsored gig with Jamie H. and Ritchie Kotzen. Might've been down in Kent. What a great show. Seeing the three of them jam on "Superstition", something I'll never forget.

Anyway, I've seen a TON of guitarists...and Guthrie simply takes the cake. I see these video clips and I'm consistently picking my jaw off the floor.

Does anyone have that "Tapping lick from Hell" tabbed out? I haven't been able to keep up with Guitar Techniques since moving here to the US. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Dave

Hey Dave, welcome to the GG Forum. Always good to see a new member jump aboard and say hello to the other GG forumites here.

I'm pretty sure that we (Tone Merchants) didn't have anything to do with the gig in UK. I'm pretty sure it was Cornford Amps that sponsored it.

The infamous "Tapping Lick from Hell" is tabbed out on the latest issue (April '05) of GT. It should be available in the US at Barnes & Nobles bookstores now. That reminds me that I should pick up a copy myself! Wink

Sounds like the gig at the Cornford Club. Man would have loved to have been there.

Thanks a LOT. Just as I figured, that lick is INSANE. I will work on it nonetheless. In the clip it doesn't look like he was making any unusual stretches.

In a complete blur of hand movements from Guthrie, a spectacular arpeggio emerges.....

Yes, that gig was at the Cornford Club, I believe May of 2003. What I REALLY respected about Guthrie that night was his "demeanor" during the entire gig. Probably 80%(including myself) were there to see Guthrie rip it up. But he showed quite a bit of restraint, and demonstrated a lot of respect towards his fellow guitarists. I think Ritchie had copies of a new CD (he had some REALLY good songs too!) to sell. Guthrie pretty much stood behind the other two and let Ritchie do most of the soloing during the jams. Fine gesture from a fine musician..........

On a side note, Ritchie has matured LIGHT YEARS beyond his "shredding" days. He is quite a nice singer as well, and showed a lot of stage presence/charisma.

Jamie's Cornford tone was absolutely SMOKING, and his chops are no joke either.
