I have a question about a set of exercises in Creative Gutar Book 1.
Example 4.15 through 4.19.
I'm wondering what types of fingerings he's using for the bends he does.
More specifically the lower note on each strin in each box....if he's performing the bends with his index finger or just doing lots of position shifts to use more favorable fingering combinations, like using the ring finger or pinky with the other fingers.
I got pulled up by my teacher for trying bends with all my fingers, specifically the pinky.. said it was a shreddy thing to do. So He told me to focus on playing bends with my index and 3rd finger, the 2nd finger is rarely used.
Often when watching Guthrie play, you'll see his little finger curl inwards so the knuckle is parallel with the fretboard. _________________ Fabulous powers were revealed to me the day I held my magic Suhr(d) aloft and said "by the power of great scale!"
I find the fourth finger ineffective in the most common applications of bends as it is much shorter, and thus harder to support with the fingers behind it. I will bend with it for smaller bends, or small curls, albeit rarely.
The other three fingers are much more useful, especially the third finger supported by the others. The first is also very important as you often land on notes with that finger.
I typically bend with all different left hand fingers.....but if you've seen the exercise I mentioned, using the index finger for the lower notes on each string would mean doing quite a few 1 and 1/2 step bends with your pointer finger alone. which is very, very possibe, but challenging aswell.
I think if I actually asked Guthrie I think he'd say......'well, I did it so and so way, but, why don't you practice it both ways.'
