Took the long drive to GIT in Hollywood to attend the clinic and hang out with Guthrie afterwards. As far as Guthrie's clinics and performances are concerned, this one wasn't anything to write home about. Guthrie's been in the Asia mode for over 6 months now and hadn't played his Erotic Cakes stuff since the Tone Mecca gigs in January. So he was noticeably rusty with the EC material as he didn't even have any of his guitars after the Sunday night Asia show until the day of the clinic. Plus, Asia had been playing in E-flat tuning and all of the EC material is in standard tuning, so that was a major adjustment for Guthrie to make as well.

Oh, well, can't win 'em all. Guthrie still wowed the GIT audience with his playing and entertained them for good two hours or so with helpful insights into his playing and fielding questions about his playing methods, techniques, gear, etc. Also, another weird thing about the clinic was how bad everything sounded there. The mix was boomy and top-heavy and, as a result, Guthrie's tone wasn't happening either - really bright and kind of on the thin side. Really strange as he sounded really good on the Asia gig a few days earlier... Here are the pics. They came out kind of dark or jittery for whatever reason, but at least you have a momento of Guthrie's first clinic at GIT.

Guthrie pointing out the logo on his new Suhr Classic with the Silent Single-Coil System. He is obviously loving the guitar very much.

Guthrie trying out a student's Suhr Standard with chambered body and F-hole. Guthrie is always game to try out a Suhr he hasn't tried before.

Great pics Ed thanks for posting them. Did you notice any other notable players while you were there?

Guthrie and I met TJ Helmerich while we were hanging out a bit after the clinic. I heard that Scott was hanging out for a bit between the breaks of his classes to catch part of the show. Scott told me that it was cool but he didn't seem to care for Guthrie's tone that afternoon. Guthrie told me that the action ended up getting really low when he re-setup his guitar for standard tuning and said there's nothing like really low action to suck the midrange out of the tone.

Yeah, i totally agreed with Ed's comments on the Clinic. Guthrie seems a bit rusty as he played those EC tunes. And the sound mix was really bad too!! It's the first time I ever felt Cornford Hellcat sounded bad.....
