Hye all,

Im on the look out for a good new stomp box delay for my pedal board. Been using the DL4 DEelay for over a year and its colouring my sound way too much.

Any ideas?????

May I suggest you check out the DLS EchoTap, that is a very nice delay. Whats your price range? Analog or digital?

I'd like a real natural type of tone that doesn't colour my sound at all. It has to be pretty small in stomp box form.

Get what Guthrie uses: T-Rex Replica.

I'd compare the audio quality of the Replica to expensive rack units from the likes of TC Electronic and Eventide.

According to a friend of mine, the T-Rex Replica has real bad noise problems and defects??? NOt sure he knows what he's talking about mind you.

Any comments on that Ed?

Well, they had some bad jack quality issues for a little while, but I sold a bunch to players when I was at Tone Merchants and they love it. I tested a bunch and had one for demo and most didn't have any problems whatsoever. But I do remember there were some returns due to the same problems that your friend is describing. They have corrected the problem and there haven't any more problems since. If you could try one, you really should. I think it sounds great. Guthrie seems real happy with it, too.

Ed, just a question: how and when does Guthrie use the replica? He has a 2290 in his rack, doesn't he?

I am selling my DLS EchoTap in order to buy a ToneCzar EchoCzar. The 6 month wait begins.

Guthrie normally never uses a rack system. He used that rack that was at TM which I put together for those shows in January. He likes to keep his rig pretty low-tech with an assortment of pedals on the floor.

Working at TC Electronic I've had the chance to test both the 2290, G-Force, G-System and Replica extensively. I may of course be biased but I have to say that nothing beats the 2290 for tone quality and features. But the Replica has very nice sounds - and it has some vintage-type delays that none of the TC-boxes can do - but I'd still say that it's main advantage is the ease of use that a stompbox offers. And no other stompbox competes with the Replica (I haven't tried the Echoczar that everybody raves about, though).

I agree that the 2290 has its own audio quality that nothing else does, but I don't think that makes it necessarily "better" than other delay units for guitar rig use. It's all personal taste when it comes to high-end gear. To some, the 2290 is too hi-fi and too pristine. To others, it's exactly what the doctor ordered. If I had my way, I'd use the Replica, the 2290, and the Eventide stuff all at once for different things.

It's really too bad the 2290 has been discontinued. I'm keeping mine. It's a classic box. It sounds so good. It's as though the wet delayed signal sounds better than the original dry signal. But something like that isn't the ideal choice to get vintage tape echo sounds. The Replica, as good as it is, isn't ideal for that kind of application either. For some things, only the good ole Echoplex or a Maxon Analog Delay will do.

It all depends on the application and what the player is going for. But as far as floor units go, the Replica is hard to beat for overall audio quality and features. I need to hear this Echoczar myself.

What about the Hughes & Kettner "Replex"... seems to have a few features such as reverb, single-head delay and double-head delay. I was just reading the Guitar Player issue with Derek Trucks on the cover and spotted an advertisement for the Replex.

Anyone out there in Guitar Land ever used/heard the Replex???

Cheers
