Does anyone know if I'll be allowed to film Guthrie at music live? |

Hey Ed,
Enjoyed your comments on Jeff Beck. I recently saw some JB video, posted over in the JB forum. He's really interesting to watch-- like he's giving his strat a chiropractic adjustment. The resulting phrases and sounds reflect the player's manipulations. More going on there than rock star poses and grimaces to mimic some cliche gimmicks and effects. The master really rolls up his sleeves, breaks out the hand tools and goes to work. It's both the meat and the motion. |

I signed up to recieve info on music live(through their website) after I found out guthrie was gonna play. I received an email from them on monday confirming the line up but with a footnote at that bottom saying that Guthrie has had to pull out. I seriously hope it was a mistake! _________________ Virtuosity is only useful when serving a musical purpose - J.S.BARK |

I emailed them but got this automated reply:
I will be out of the office starting 01/11/2005 and will not return until
07/11/2005.
Can anyone confirm that Guthrie isn't going to be there, because that was the only reason I was going.
Thanks |

I strongly agree. We all subscribe to this site because we love the music and guitar playing style of GG. We're not here to pay homage MAB or anybody else. We will have our opinion!
For the record, I was lucky enough to get a front row seat at Guthrie's clinic at Music Live last year and he was not only his usual awesome self playing-wise, but he was very pleasant to the audience as well. He answered questions he's probably fielded 1,000 times, but he was amiable enough to talk us through his favourite licks, his preference for hybrid picking, 8 finger tapping etc etc. I can't wait for another dose this year! :D |

I think the only thing that works against him is that he tends to be inconsistent and he can be totally on or really off. I've seen him live 3 times and one was unbelievable while the other two were good but not quite up to par with his best playing on record. But man, when he's on, I just can't imagine anybody being better. For me, personally, Guthrie, Metheny, Beck and Jimi cover as much musical ground as I'll ever need as far as guitar-based music is concerned. If there is just one single most amazing guitar performance I've ever seen, I'd have to say it was Jeff playing "Where Were You" live during the night he could simply do no wrong. It sounded even better than the record and I just can't envision any other player, dead or alive, pulling that off live with such breathtaking control and emotional intensity. _________________ Ed Yoon

No evidence of GG or the fact that he ever was goina play. The whole show was poor this year to previous years. I won't expect to be going again! |
