Are there any types of gypsy jazz techniques, ala the styles of Romane and Stochelo Rosenberg? |

Lot's of righthand "doorknob-movement" for the picking.
Go to the forum of www.guitarprinciples.com There's a guitarist there called 'Ney Mello' who knows alot about picking technique. Ask for the "Ney archive" on the General Forum. And buy the principles book too. |

i'm an obsessive gypsy jazz player and fan.
check out https://shoppingcart.djangobooks.com/cat--Books--books.html
there is a book by michael horowitz called Gypsy Picking that is very good.
also check out Romanes L'esprit Manouche: A Comprehensive Study of Gypsy Jazz Guitar.
Bireli Lagrene has a book of transcriptions out as well that covers both Gypsy Jazz Project albums.
avoid the Jorgensen stuff like the plague, but the Robin Nolan stuff is cool, although very basic, and features really good playalong discs.
if you really want to shell out some $$$ Stochelo Rosenberg has a method that runs about $100.
then there is a handful of free tabs and technique stuff at http://www.hotclub.co.uk/
cheers! |

The picking is very different from the electric guitar.
The no.1 in Gypsy playing is 'authentic manouche tone'.
The right hand is floating, only touching the guitar with the upper arm. There is practically no muting with the right hand.
Lots more downstrokes than with normal picking.
Lots of use of gravity and arm weight.
There are lots of videos of Birelli and Dorado Schmitt on google video, who I think of as having the best gypsy technique. (Well Django as well :p)
