Sometimes I'd love to hear him repeat some solo or lick that I heard him do previously note-for-note but he never does! Mad Laughing Let's see, I must have seen him play up-close at the shop on several occasions just noodling around for 2~3 hours altogether, the clinic day he must have played virtually non-stop for 2 hours straight, saw him play for a good chunk of the afternoon at the studio during the Asia sessions, and I've got this Fellowship CD material and the live DVD and I don't think I've seen him play the same lick twice!

Yes, Guthrie does use certain patterns and techniques repeatedly that are uniquely his own, but the lines and the licks are never quite the same. He always seems to be coming up with something new that I haven't heard him do before. Either he has an endless reservoir of licks or he's just improvising and doing something new right on the spot. I believe it's the latter. Guthrie is obviously a great improvisor. He doesn't play licks for the sake of playing them. He always seems to be creating something at the spur of the moment.

I believe that this is an aspect of Guthrie's playing and musicianship in which we'll constantly observe improvements as time passes by. After all, he can't possibly play any faster or master more techniques, or could he?!? Shocked I'm sure he'll keep throwing new things in as far as techniques are concerned, but I really believe it will mainly be about the music - new ideas, new concepts, new lines, new styles, etc.

A question for Guthrie: When you solo, is it always off-the-cuff improvisation or do you work things out in advance note-for-note on occasions? And if you do work some things out in some songs in advance, will you repeat them in live performance or will you improvise?

you definitely got that right, ed. i think i mentioned this somewhere else. it's amazing how he doesn't repeat himself and keeps coming up with cool new lines and licks. how does one do that? Confused even all the instructional clips that he does for that gt magazine. they all sound different yet they all sound like guthrie.

btw, "inability" seems like a wrong term. "refusal" is probably the better word. Wink

It's one of the most exciting aspects of Guthrie's playing. You just don't know what to expect. It's always something new that he's throwing at you. And I understand that Guthrie is never ever satisfied with his playing, so you know he'll constantly improve and keep throwing you cool new curves for many years to come.

It is partly due to Guthrie's inability to repeat himself that I have concluded he's not a well man.
