|

Well right now Im just starting out with an Ibanez RG1550 with Evo pickups.
Was thinking of gettin a Fender BLues Jr for my clean sound.
To get A tone similar to Guthrie's...what pedals do I need?(mind you my distortion will come only from the pedals!!)
love his tones on Bad Asteroid and Wonderful Slippery thing....
Was thinking of a stack of 2-3 Od/Dist ofcourse....
Any suggestions?? _________________ Wonderfully Slippery |

He uses a lot less OD than you think. Set the amp to break up then a pedal to boost it into smooth tone. But seriously good luck cos I sure don't think you are going to get anywhere near those tones with that gear. _________________ Soon to be proud user of Suhr and hopefully Cornford |

Most true, as I know I can't sound anywhere near what Guthrie sounds like with a Suhr through the Cornford Hellcat. Believe me, I've tried as has many others! _________________ Ed Yoon

Actually, for his rock stuff with the Hellcat, the gain is set at 7 (around 2 o'clock) and the Hellcat has mondo amounts of gain! I was surprised when I saw the settings on his Hellcat. I thought the gain would be in between 4 and 5. Even with the volume pot on his guitar all the way up, he doesn't sound like he's got that much gain. The level of dynamics and the range of gain he controls just with his picking attack is pretty amazing. _________________ Ed Yoon

Some pedals I recommend:
Maxon SD-9 (Distortion)
Tonebone Classic (Distortion)
Xotic BB Preamp (Overdrive)
Hermida Zen Drive (Overdrive)
Xotic RC Booster (Boost) _________________ Ed Yoon

Well, that's what I saw on his Hellcat during an Asia rehearsal and just before an EC set at TM last year. He may indeed turn it down somewhat for the Fellowship materials. Normally when he plays at the Bassment, he said that the gain is set at half-way up and the volume is turned all the way up and then he'll use various boost/OD pedals for different levels of dirt and saturation. _________________ Ed Yoon

Yup, it's the Hurricane - a very versatile little combo. _________________ Ed Yoon

I've got serious GAS for one. Spent an hour with one a month ago, and I'm going back to test it some more with my Suhr. Really beautiful sounding amp, great reverb as well. Haven't really decided yet since there's a lot of things out there and it's a lot of money for a 20w one channel combo (unfortunately, to me it actually felt worth every penny).
(OT:) any suggestions for alternatives?

If it felt like it was worth every penny, then that's what you should get! _________________ Ed Yoon

I think it's worth it. I have one and love it; so much so i'm getting another!!! I find its not great for agressive rock tones though. Good job thats not what im into! |
