Okay, if you were an alien collector with a spaceship with a time machine and a large vault what band would you make for Guthrie?

I'd probably have Frank Zappa on vocals, Les Claypool on Bass, Bach on keyboards and Vinnie Colauita (sp.. as ever) on drums.

Hmmm...

JS Bach? That's mighty heavy! Laughing Interesting, though... I'd go for Beethoven myself as he was the more "rock" sorta guy and possibly the greatest improvisor who ever lived from historical snippets of people who have seen him do so.

Guthrie on guitar
Prince on vocals (for male singer), Lennon is second choice, Plant the third
Bjork (or Kate Bush) for female vocals
Thelonius Monk on piano
Joe Zawinul on keyboards
Charlie Parker on alto sax
Sonny Rollins on tenor sax
Jaco Pastorius on bass
Tony Williams on drums, Jack DeJohnette as the "alive" choice.

Kind of fun to think about although a lot of these pairings or groupings could never happen and probably wouldn't work in reality even if they were all alive. Would love to see Guthrie with all kinds of guys. How's this for a trio?

Guthrie on guitar
Victor Wooten on bass
Dennis Chambers on drums, Vinnie would be so awesome as well.

But very often, the "superband" concept doesn't seem to work out as great as we'd hope. At a certain level of musicianship, I really believe chemistry and synergy between the musicians are more important than levels of individual virtuosity. You don't want too many "busy" players in one band. You want people who complement each other. The Pat Metheny Group is a great example of that. Lyle Mays on piano/keyboards and Steve Rodby on bass are very complementary and supportive of what Pat does. I'd think Guthrie thinks of those terms than having "monsters" on every other instrument. I think the Fellowship is a great example of that, too.

I was really tempted to make a band that would be a real ordeal..

Syd Barret and Janis Joplin on vocals,
Ringo on drums,
Miles Davis on trumpet
Larry "the mole" taylor on bass
Liberace on piano.
Kenny G on sax.

You'd be pulled in umpteen different directions, musically, I can imagine they'd rarely talk to each other..
