Just what we need....another thread about Waves....

However, has anyone noticed the apparent influence of Carl Verheyen on this piece? I've know Guthrie's mentioned Carl in numerous magazine articles, and he also gets a mention or two in his book, but it wasn't evident to me until I started looking at this piece in detail how strong the influence is there.

Compare the opening lines of Waves with the main theme of Garage Sale or the chorus of Power Tools, for instance, and you'll see what I mean. Stylistically, the pieces aren't that similar, but GGs use of string-skipping and position shifting is textbook Verheyen.

That said, Garage Sale is playable, whereas I swear Waves isn't Wink

Jordan.

you're right jordan. it's fairly obvious in "waves". but i tell myself that you can see the verheyen aproach to arpeggio fingerings in a lot of gg's playing. it's very apparent in his tapping shapes, which could be describeed as extended vereheyen string skipping arps. the monster lick that begins the solo in "fives" is a good example. (i know how to play it, but i sure don't know how to play it Cool Sad Wink )
