Hi,
I about to order a Govan Std cherry burst and I'd like to know if the SSH+ would be great with this guitar, I don't like having too much bass in my tone.
What kind of neck pickup do you recommand with this guitar, SSV or DSV ?

I think it kind of depends on the type of amp you're using. I think the DSH+ and the DSV pickups work fine on Guthrie's Cherry SB Std as they're a good match with the Cornfords. The SS pickups have a little more cut than the DS pickups but are virtually identical otherwise. The DSV pickup is very sweet for the neck position. Guthrie says he can't envision a better sounding neck pickup. _________________ Ed Yoon

So I've got Guthrie's #1 Root Beer back in my hands at home. I just changed the strings after it being subjected to a good deal of mauling as a demo guitar at Cornford's booth during NAMM. Man, it sure is nice to have this baby back for a while. It's sweeter and warmer than I remember it. Guthrie has broken it in real nice. It plays better than ever - granted it just got a new Plek fret-leveling and dress job just before NAMM. Guthrie tweaked the action and the setup a bit during NAMM as well. I've been playing it for the past hour unplugged and it sounds and plays just gorgeously. Great guitars do indeed age well. Plus, this one's got the Guthrie mojo! _________________ Ed Yoon

Well, I'd love to visit Sweden someday, but probably in July-August! I've become a thoroughly nice weather wuss. Hey, once you get the PhD and get a six-figure paying job you'll be able to do and get whatever you want, man!
I do count my blessings all the time. I'm not rich by any means and work hard like any other normal middle class guy trying to raise a healthy family, but I do have a cool job and working with the likes of Guthrie and being able to hang out with him is truly something special. _________________ Ed Yoon

I have an alder N4 and was wondering if anyone could tell me what the possible sound/tone differences could be between the existing L-500 Bill Lawrence that's in it and the SSH+?? I love the SD '59 in the neck and I read a post here that said the DSV that Guthrie loves is about the same pickup only smoother...AND I'm wondering if the BL I have in the bridge might be a bit 'thin' compared to the SSH+. I ask too 'cause the Larry Carlton track GG plays to has a wonderfully brown tone (!) Do you think I'd hear a significant difference in tone with a pickup swap? Of course, any input at all from Alex, Suhr's seasoned Jedi master, would be much apreciated. I'm such a nerd for tone, I know...

Me, the Jedi master?!? No, I only supply the weapons to the REAL Jedi masters like Guthrie and those who want to follow in his footsteps.
I certainly think you'll get more clarity as well as more warmth out of the SSH+ over the BL. I'm not sure how hot that BL pickup is although I do believe it's hotter than the SSH+. The new Aldrich pickup is slightly hotter than the SSH+ but is about the same in every other area. _________________ Ed Yoon

Man, you're fast.. thanks for that! Crap, I am seriously swooning over this new pickup Knowing that is solely based on the SSH+ and that Aldrich tweaked it in..oh, this baby's gonna make the N4 the tonal monster it was really meant to be! btw, not to ramble, but I have this SS H&K Tour Reverb which really sounds great but when I checked out some tube amps (Mesas) I really saw how the bridge pup got reaaal thin on the clean channel...too trebly and telephonic..not unheard of complaints from some N4 owners. This whole thing is really hooking me up... And the Mesa amps were no surprise..generic..scratchy distortion and resonant eq boominess in both clean and dirty channels. When I 'fix' the N4, I know I will eventually find the right Cornford... Guthrie's playing changed my life and it's now...

Well, I drop in here on a regular basis during the day now - if only to delete the spammers who sign up with links to viagra and porn sites.
I think the Aldrich pickups would be right up your alley and work really well in the N4. These pickups have power but dripping wet tone and great clarity. They're not hi-fi at all and have that warmth of the great vintage pickups but with great string-to-string definition and superb balance between the lows, mids, and the highs. I think you'll love 'em. _________________ Ed Yoon

i do love my ssh+, that's for sure. and i come from using a dimarzio x2n (ouch! a pickup so hot it seriously interferes with string vibration, but u really get those vai-flexable tones from it), and a emg 81 (seriously hot. great for scooped chugga chugga). both are really cool, gimmicky METAL pickups. but ssh+ does metal as well, while still being a 'real' pickup. it splits really well with the middle pickup for instance. so i can literally go from wayne krantz to doug aldrich with a flick of the switch (well, can't really play that well though).

Hi everyone! i got the DiMarzio Air humbuckers in my Ibanez ... Air Norton on the neck and Air Zone on the bridge ... pretty awesome ...even max the gain and it'll never muddy up...pretty clear pups so its like being naked.. just thought i'd share ... oh yeah i got very close to g.g's dirtty tone on the clips where he's playing the b.b. king and other legend's style? but it's not that i'm on a mission to copy his' but it's very versatile set up, so that makes it easier for me to find/have my own preferred sound and the clarity got me sold.. anyway have a good day.
