Well, here are some pics from the GPS CD release party at the Burbank Bar & Grille featuring Guthrie on guitar, John Payne on vocals and bass, Jay Schellen on drums and Ryo Okumoto of Spock's Beard on keyboards. The place was packed and it was a good fun show. Couldn't really get around to taking pics of the whole band even though I tried in vain...

Guthrie sounded killer as usual and you could tell he was having a really good time. And that's the thing about him; no matter what he's doing - his solo Erotic Cakes stuff, the jazz/fusion Fellowship stuff, this progressive pop-rock gig with GPS, accompanying a torch jazz singer in a small bar, playing with a techno-dance pop band (The Young Punx) in a large venue, blues jams at the school, or whatever other weird projects he gets himself entangled in, he always plays with 100% enthusiasm and passion. He just loves playing the guitar and making music. It's always inspiring to see him doing his thing and, most of all, having fun.

Guthrie's sparse effects set-up: MXR Phase 100 borrowed from John Payne, Ernie Ball Volume pedal with the Peterson Strobe tuner attached, and the Boss delay pedal in the effects loop. The Cornford footswitch changes channels. Guthrie almost never uses reverb.

Hey, nice guitar cable! Wink

Guthrie playing slide... He uses his rolling paper pack to lift the strings for playing slide. Of course, he uses the hair band for muting strings when doing crazy 8-finger tapping stuff, but he didn't do any of that for this gig.

I hung out with Guthrie after the show for a few hours and I ended up getting home around 2:30AM, but it was all good fun. Guthrie will surely be back in January for NAMM and we shall see what surprises he'll unleash then! Wink

Cheers Ed, great info once again.

It was interesting to see the pedal shot - it appears GG does most of his own tech work then, given the appearance of a roadie wrench, spare strinngs, and some fast fret Wink

Out of interest - what do you guys make of the Peterson floor tuner? It's fairly pricey, but I've read good things about it. (Are GG's Suhr's Buzz Feiten equipped?).

Thanks again,
Jordan.

The peterson tuner is great, I've had mine for about a year and a half and its the best tuner Ive ever used, more accurate than boss. You do in this case get what you pay for.

I've just swapped my Boss TU-2 for a Strobostomp so I'll see how it works out. I also have a Peterson 490 for the studio.

I bought the Strobostomp ready for the arrival of my first Suhr which, as per the GG model it's based on, is indeed Buzz Feiten equipped.

Cool pics, Ed.

Is it just me, or does that fretboard look a little dry? Tell G to get some Fret Doctor! It's amazing stuff!

I don't know why but an image of Guthrie just popped into my head without a beard or long curly hair.

Sorry, it's past 5 am. I think I need sleep.

Hi Tanya,

They had plans to do a few unplugged tracks but decided not to at the last minute. Guthrie confided to me that they really didn't have much time to rehearse and that they were debating about doing a short acoustic set, but scuttled the idea just before the show. Oh, well...

I think it's just you. Wink No, seriously, all these photos look rather dry. It was actually kind of moist in there. Laughing I think it's time to retire my 8 year old camera.
