Improv Game

Okay so I was thinking of fun things to do with a band. And from playing in a really good trio where we play original fusion/jazz/odd time stuff as well as standards, I thought wouldn’t it be fun to have a structured free improv based on a game.

So here is the game…

Number 12 pieces of paper 1 through 12. And put them into a hat, or what have you…

1. First grab 1 number. This number dictates how many different notes are used in the improvisation. Say for example you pull out “5”
2. Now put the 5 back in the bag, and pick 5 numbers. The numbers correlate with the notes starting on C. So…
1.C
2.C#/Db
3.D
4.D#/Eb
5.E
6.F
7.F#
8.G
9.G#/Ab
10.A
11.A#/Bb
12.B
- So let’s say we pick 4,3,10,8,then 9 so the notes available are Eb,D,A,G,G#, or if you prefer it in order..DEbGG#A

3. An option….Pull 1 number for time signature…example 9 so in 9/8 or 9/4.

Another option is to Pick the number of notes (example “5”) then pick 1 number for the key, say “3 or D” then pick 5 numbers, say 13579, then relate those back to the key, so the notes are; DEF#G#A#

Anyways, Just another way to be creative, I guarantee there’ll be some interesting stuff happening.

*remember there is also the possibility of getting 12 notes, so that would be chromatic, then there is the also the possibility of 1 note, which could be interesting trying to make it interesting.

-Another variation is to let everyone pick their own numbers, so one person might only be able to play CEbG# and A in 5/4, then another is C#DF#A#B in 3/4 and then another only get’s G in 9/4.

So what you think, have some fun….

BTW feel free to try it by yourself, it’s a good time….

Cheers

Very Happy

Another thought...

If you need a rhythmic motive you could use the numbers as well. Like assigning a number a note value. So let's do that...

1. Whole note
2. Half note
3. quarter note triplet
4. eighth note
5. 5/4 (sorry can't remember the name) or even add up 1 and 4 or 2 and 3, etc..
6. triplet
7. 7/4 or triplet and whole note
8. 16th notes
9. triplet, quarter note triplet
10. quintuplet
11. whole note, whole note
12. sextuplet

Anyways that's one way to do it.

This would also be a good thing to try in a rut, especially if you need to write a tune.

But you may just want to simplify it to it's first 2 steps above. Don't want to make it to complicated. It takes the charm away.

Cheers.

Cool Smile Bit similar to a 12 note row if you've ever had a go at composing with one of those, you can get some very 'interesting' sounding phrases and melodies going.

I'll give this a try later Smile
