This guy can play jazz fusion like the best of them, but I love his mix of everthing with African and Eastern music. His band always comprises of top musicians in Europe too.

I don't usually do this, but since Gurthie, and everyone else here, are always open to new music, I thought it would be ok.

wow! ive listened through the clips on his website and i have every intention of looking further into this guy. I woke up today feeling a little bored of all the music in my cd collection... this is the first stuff i've listened to today and i've been inspired by it. Just what i was looking for, thank you!

Hi.

I'm glad you like it! He had a huge influence on my musical taste and playing.

His music is quite diverse, so make sure you get the right CD for what you're looking for:

- more "conventional" jazz fusion: Zanzibar, Million Waves

- jazz/ african: Margreds and Friends

- jazz/ oriental: Bakida

- re-arrangement of Vietnamese folk tunes: Tales from Vietnam

- he also has a Jimi Hendrix tribute CD called Purple

of course, all of these above categorisation is relative, and can't tell you about his wicked sense of time and melody, or the wonderful musicians he works with who give the music such authentic feel, energy and flair.

in short, outright weird and wonderful stuff

Very Happy

Yeah, it's good stuff. He's playing with some heavyweight guys. I like the clips from "Tales from Viet-Nam". Really good playing throughout. I really liked "Dance of the Comet" form the "Three Trios" album. I see that he's been around a while. Never heard of him until I saw this thread. In fact, I've learned more about new players and different kinds of music to check out from this forum than any other source over the past several years. Kudos to you, Guthrie fans! You're definitely a most open-minded bunch! Very Happy

Nguyen Le is on the very top of my "guitarist whose stuff I should buy" list right now. I've heard some tunes from Bakida and Tales from Vietnam that I really loved, so I'll be probably picking up one of these albums soon...

I worked with Pete Southern (ultra cool melodic metal GP with 'Balance Of Power' http://www.balance-of-power.com/ ) for about 2 years in Denmark St. London (and a great friend he is too) and I drove him insane playing Le's "3 Trios" continuously for about a year. This is a Le album you must check out. Peter Erskine, Marc Johnson, Mino Cinelu, Danny Gottlieb, Dieter Ilg and more. C'est La Shiznit. No question!
