No, there is an article about 15 other shredders you should here if you like John 5.
John 5 doesn't mention Guthrie in the interview that I recall. He does mention fender telecasters quite a bit, though. _________________ Fabulous powers were revealed to me the day I held my magic Suhr(d) aloft and said "by the power of great scale!"

I know it could be considered a complimentary thing, but would some of these other guitarists be happy to be named as "shredders"?

Got the album and have gave it a few spins. He's a very good and interesting player, but his shred (fast and technical) playing is somewhat generic and his country playing lacks conviction to my ears. I like his approach to writing, arrangements and sounds, but his lines and harmonic sensibilities don't really grab me. I'm sure some others will dig him more for other reasons. And I don't see the need to say one's better than the other. But you all know who I'd prefer! _________________ Ed Yoon

I know that the term "shred" and "shredder" is much maligned and for a good reason, but what other term can we use to describe highly technical playing that includes blindlingly fast speed? "Fusion" isn't all that good of a word either. So many potential fans may get turned off when we describe Guthrie's music and playing as "shred" and "fusion". I think we need to come up with a new term for describing what someone like Guthrie does, but that's a tough one. _________________ Ed Yoon

Well, it's all a new breed of shred. Essentially, shred (God, I do hate that term!) takes backseat to the music on hand and complements the compositions and the musical content. It's a welcome trend but, obviously, some do it better than others because the ability to compose and arrange something that holds the listeners' attention is quite a gift in itself. I must say that I'm enjoying Joel Hoekstra's "The Moon Is Falling" quite a bit. Highly recommended. _________________ Ed Yoon

These are the descriptions in the Guitarist magazine, the editorial staff have a quirky sense of humour, and probably know Guthrie via sister magazine Guitar Technique, well enough to rag him or share an in joke. In the UK we've a scary woman called Gilly Goulden who basically raps free-form poetry of a pastoral theme inspired by food or drink. You might have heard of Pam Eyres.. it's like that but more upper class and less whimsical.. also Jilly doesn't work for MI5.. Pam did.
that's her standing next to the most dangerous shirt you could possibly look at if you're tripping I think the guys at Guitarist were ripping off her style of obverse consumerist enthusiasm poetry.
Here's my interpretation of what hey wrote. It could be that Jethro Tull is an English phenomenom as the singer had a bad set of teeth so you guys may be forgiven for overlooking them. I think (purely my perspective, here) it might mean Guthrie resembles Jethro Tull's Flute player Ian Anderson in an abstract sense... in the 60s:
I searched long and hard for an image that did kinda match. Loads of people in the UK misconceive Ian to be a guy called Jethro Tull. Jethro Tull was infact a tollpuddle martyr, so a historical figure the band was named after. Jethro Tull was famous for upholding a permissive view of short-bread that was frowned upon by the church. OK the last bit hasn't been proven yet.
The Moog reference is to do with this guy :
A shred guitar playing dog-like creature and long term side kick to Arthur the Caterpillar from the TV series "Willow the Wisp", The Moog's soaring shred solos broke the bad magic of Evil Edna, the witch.
Actually I'm lying. Willow the Wisp was a top notch TV show though. The Moog probably refers to the solos Guthrie cooks up that sound like the most adventurous prog rock synth solos (played on a Moog) distilled (and then some). _________________ Fabulous powers were revealed to me the day I held my magic Suhr(d) aloft and said "by the power of great scale!"
