right,

i've been playing classical guitar for 6 years now, and the electric guitar for 2, but i'm still as mediocre as i could possibly be.
i cant shred, my improvising is diabolical, and i'm only just getting the hang of playing "by ear".

no, i dont (and am not able to) practice 8 hours a day or whatever, because i go to school Shocked and my knob of a dad gets annoyed when i play when hes asleep.

so can anyone tell me how i could improve those skills i mentioned above, but not have to devote all my time to it?

thanks

well, that doesn't sound too bad. could make for some interesting noices at least. i would say that concentrate on one of these areas instead of all three, and the everything will eventually be allright. i'd strongly vote for developing your ear, since your ear is, well, what it's all about. if you don't hear anything in your head, or don't know what you're hearing, you're in trouble. if that doesn't work, try shredding, since mechanics doesn't require ear. now, making music is something else though, but WHAT it is, is up to you to decide.

there are a lot of great sloppy playing around, and tons of lousy shredding.

listen to stuff. transcribe it. and when you've learned it, develop it and make it your own. voila!

ps

i should charge s***loads of money for my advice, since they're the best around, but nevertheless, my own playing sucks Wink

a lot of talking and less playing amongst a lot of people.

talking is good.
