well, the subject is what it's all about: me venting of some frustration.

i recently got a job with a recording and touring metal outfit. cool guys, fun music to play. a professional context that forces me to learn new stuff, get my shit together and presents a situation that gives me different exposure and expands my network, bla bla.

but why, why, do people play in C and drop Bb tunings on regular, non-bariton guitars?

i'll have to play 12-60 gague strings to make that work, and i'll still have to recreate live the stupidly difficult tapping arpeggios and crap i put on the album. (and can only use my main suhr axe for half of the live shows Sad i'm NOT reverting that precious puppy to drop Bb!)

yeah, luxury problems, but please chime in with on your thoughts and experiences of detuned metal. i'd appreiate your input. i'm getting too old for this Very Happy .

tell me about string gagues, prefered speakers, pickups, whatever ...

ed, do you guys set up a (m)any detuned axes? any concerns?

thanks ..

don't we all Wink

i do have an old hamer californian that is a great axe for metal, and nothing else. actually had a blast with that one detuned yesterday. i'm almost considering buying some nu-metal albums ... just kiddin. playing it is enough Laughing

i could spec out a metal riff machine in a heartbeat (mahogany, pau ferro, fixed bridge). but the thing is that how professional this project might be, the paycehck is pretty lousy Laughing u know, there's a fee for playing with ozz fest ... etc etc. when touring plans are settled, then we might be talking. ...

my main gripe is just that i do believe the guitar sounds best tuned to Eb or E. At least one can say that below that it becomes a different instrument, and although i love many detuners (jeff kollman and ty tybor for instance), i still have some time to go before i feel at home with it.

There's been a lot of discussion about detuning and the current trend for it on the Sevenstring forum - bottom line is that some folks use it creatively, some use it to get on a musical bandwagon in the hope of shifting some merchandise.

Sounds like you're lucky enough to get in with some creative types so perhaps it might be worth picking up a half-reasonable secondhand axe for tuning down with. As for string gauges:

thanks a lot! i have tension charts, but this calculator is really cool and convenient.

i have nothing against detuning per se. that would be stupid. notes themselves are like children, innocent. it's just something i'm trying to get used to i guess. the outfit i'm curretly working with is more of a commercial project, and i also guess that i'm kind of put of by the detuning thing as a not so self reflective way of being contemporary. (in this specific case.) i like it though. the musicians are great and the material is, if sometimes a bit commercial and generic for my grumpy taste, challenging to play, and i guess fun to listen to if you're a normal human being.

it's a whole new world of guitar mechanics that's opening up here ... and i'm a simple guy.

thanks again.

If the only aim is to sound contemporary without referrence to originallity and creativity then detuning is going to be as dull as simply grabbing a baritone guitar etc - clearly however sometimes we have to pay the bills and it appears that you've managed to satisfy both the artistic and contemporary camps Very Happy

I haven't touched a guitar in 16 years or so - all the current trend for detuning/extended scale guitars is quite exciting but its taking some time to sort the wheat from the chaff I must admit ^^
