Hey!
Are you talking about his tone in general or a specific voilin tone which you get by using your volume pot?
Eric's tone is very hard to emulate, and I believe that his tone is much in his hands.
This might not have been an answe at all but I hope you get my point!
Keep well!

yeah i meant his actual tone
your completely right by saying its all in he fingers but a basic tone would be possible to get from gear alone some way or the other |

Hey here's a quick summary of the "get the tone section" that guthrie wrote in guitar techniques when he transcribed eric johnsons cliffs of dover.
Bridge Pick-Up
Some of the tone rolled off
Fattest Meatiest OverDriven tone you can achieve
Just enough treble for pinched harmonics to come through
Plenty of low end and midrange
As much gain as possible without losing clarity
Hope it helps

^^because you wrote "without using clarity" which means to have no clarity
but you probably meant "without losing clarity" |

You also have to use exactly the right kind of batteries, the right kind of jack plugs, and Eric NEVER faces in a northerly direction when he records a solo. Except when there's a full moon.
Oh, and don't forget Eric has hearing impairment from years of standing next to a Marshall on full whack. Interpret that how you will... _________________ http://www.custom-transcription.com

Here's some amp and effects settings from 2001.
50 watt 68 plexi
Y splitter into both inputs
Fuzz Face settings for overdrive sounds, brass jacks.
Tube overdrive settings for lead sounds, also brass jacks.
Echoplex delay time.
