My first encounter with Guthrie was a couple years ago at Tone Merchants.
I brought my beloved D13 FTR37 combo over to TM for Ed and others to check out. This was a party of some sort and Guthrie was coming over with Paul Cornford.

When Guthrie arrived, he heard someone playing the 13 and someone behind closed doors in the soundroom playing very loudly and it was not so pretty.

After a bit Guthrie plugged a Vigier fretless into the 13 and gave it a whirl. At that point my jaw hit the floor. The guy went through about 15 minutes of the best guitar playing ever , on a fretless no less and I was laughing at how rediculous this guy was.

The barrage of noise coming from the room where the Herbert was cranking out some detuned metal was really getting in the way of one of the most amazing displays of guitar wizardry I had ever seen. Guthrie, was not phased and just kept playing his ass off and seemed inspired by both the amp and the guitar. I was contemplating murdering the guy in the other room. Not only was he oblivious to the treat a few of us were observing but when Ed finally told him to shut it off, he still did not have a clue.

I had become aware of Guthrie through Cornford as I was a dealer for them. He was my favorite guy on the amp demo cd from Cornford and I was aware of his talent. Nothing prepared me for the stuff I saw and heard him play that day and the DVD I got from Ed of Guthrie in the Jazz club is equally amazing and probably some of the best guitar playing I have ever seen or heard in my life.

Talking to him outside at TM gave me a sense of how humble and gentle he is and he definitely should be regarded among the best of the best. A great musician and person. Thanks to Ed Yoon for really pushing to have Guthrie available to all of us.

Hey Steve, how can we forget that day? It was the '03 NAMM party. As I mentioned on another thread about the "First Experience" with Guthrie, I simply was not prepared to have a player of his caliber visit the shop. He was really the first truly amazing player to visit the shop and check things out. Yeah, I remember that annoying guy who insisted on trying the Herbert at mega volumes in the sound room. I remember Guthrie really digging the D13 and getting some incredible sounds out of it. He later told me that that was the amp that he remembered the most from that evening.
