Hey guys and gals

Iv just managed to find myself a very talented sax player, so have put together a fusion band with a few other dudes from my uni "the mighty mal-funk-shen"

I figured i would start another thread detailing some of the standards that the fellowship play so you can explore the same routes they did and get yourself into that fusion side of things.

so 1st is the fellowship CD you can find for download on the net

01 – Seventh Heaven

this is a fellowship tune, according to Zakk they wrote it very quickly, i have done my own transcription of this one, aswell as got hold of the fellowships lead sheet to this... I tried it out with my band... its a REAL demon

02 – One Shining Soul

This is the first of many Joshua Redman tunes played by the guys, and can be found on the CD "freedom in the groove"
http://www.amazon.com/Freedom-Groove-Joshua-Redman/dp/B000002NA7/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1267444629&sr=1-1

03 – Phase Dance

This is a Pat Metheny tune and can be found on the CD "pat metheny group"
http://www.amazon.com/Pat-Metheny-Group/dp/B0000261NL

04 – Lucky Seven

another dude the fellowship are clearly fond of is Dave Weckl, this tune is from "Synergy"
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000UAWGFM/ref=dm_sp_alb

05 – Can’t Dance

Another Joshua Redman tune, again this is from "freedom in the groove"

06 – Mercy, Mercy

aka "mercy mercy mercy" was recorded most notably by cannonball adderly
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mercy-Cannonball-Adderley/dp/B000005GY5/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1267444989&sr=8-1

07 – Work Song

another tune recorded by cannonball adderly

08 – I Remember Wes

a tune that you should have too much trouble finding george benson playing

09 – Access Denied

another Dave Weckl tune from "rhythm of the soul"
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rhythm-Soul-Dave-Weckl-Band/dp/B000007W7T/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1267445360&sr=8-2

10 – The Chicken

this is a classic Jaco Pastorius song, again, recorded many times

There are also 4 more tunes not found on this download that were on the CD

BNH - Brand New Heavies
Chromazone - Mike Stern
Headin' Home - Joshua Redman
Oneness of mind - ?

Other notable tunes the guys play that spring to mind

Tipatinas - Mike Stern
mr PC - John coltane
straight no chaser - thelonious monk
have a talk with god - stevie wonder
Rumples - Chris Potter (Ultrahang)
Some Skunk Funk - Brecker Bros
Pick Up The Pieces - Average White Band

can anyone think of anymore?

make more contemporary arrangements of older bebop standards. then you might avoid falling into the trap of sounding like a band from the 80's Wink

do not cover anything from the 80's. especially nor CC electric band. that's ust pure lameness.

just kidding, somewhat.

good choice of tunes man!

i know! just bullshitting Wink

actually, what felt so cool when i got to hear the fellowship stuff at first is that they did the age old 80's music school fusion thing, but still managed to sound exciting. obviously that is mainly because of guthrie's ability to pay homage to many influences while doing his own thing.

i love to play fusion stuff. it's just too fun. i'm a hack though, but it's challenging music and it's just very entertaining to blow some mike stern or brecker brother tunes. but but i'd rather listen to something else than a fusion cover band in a club, if it's not very very good or has some kind of original take on it. you guys probably rock hard!
