Hey all, just downloaded the backing tracks for erotic cakes and trying to use to tracks to help improve my improvsing in the modes. i currently own creative guitar 1+2 and cant decide on which patterns to use e.g the 3 note per string patterns or the shapes in the first book which are pentatonics with added notes. anyone have any advice to add?

cheers!

If you are unfamiliar with the different modes you can use either type of pattern as they are a good starting points to memorize the modes. However ultimately modes aren't about patterns. You should focus on the actual notes of the modes(A,B,C etc...) and not the dots on the patterns.
In order to make good music you probably won't need to use all the notes of the mode anyways. My advice is to write down the notes of each mode, find them on a small area of the fretboard and spend some time on that area. It could be on a single string, two strings, non adjacent strings etc...
Most importantly, use your ears, there are notes out the modes that would work great at a particular moment.
