I don't think any guitar excells at fusion better than another.
Look at Greg Howe, used to use ESP guitars, which are mainly focused to metal, now he uses his Laguna sig, which is similar to his old ESP.
Guthrie uses Suhr, but he's used Suhrs in the style of teles and strats, he's used PRS, I'm fairly sure he'll have used a hollowbody at points.
Pat Metheny uses Ibanez hollowbody guitars.
Ibanez are quite popular amongst the more "shreddy" fusion guys.
Dave Weiner (who's becoming more fusion as of late) is using PRS solid body guitars.
Really it's about what feels and sounds good for you!
Though if you're wanting a suggestion, look at the Godin Progression model. That guitar just screams fusion! Especially in the blonde w/maple fretboard.

well, the OP basically asked for a more versatile rock to hard rock guitar.
it certainly isn't a queastion of the guitar as much as the player (duh!), but still some pointers could be given about specs -- not brands (says nothing really).
my main suggestion would be: don't go for overly hot pickups. you'd want something capable of dynamics, but with enough edge to convince in heavier format.
don't shy away from a neck that's thicker than stupid-thin. gives more resonance to the guitar which will come through with cleaner tones. it will also accomodate different playing styles. like, you might not play convincing blues with a classical left hand position, and not do holdsworth legato with your thumb over the neck -- but if you sometimes want to do both, get something else than a boat neck or an ibanez wizard.
in general, a hollow body won't really make it in a hi gain situation. although they look cooler than anything dean guitars represents
