Yes, Guthrie is finally getting the recognition he deserves in the mainstream guitar press. The July issue of Guitar Player will feature Guthrie on the cover with a big article/interview story that heralds the arrival of a major talent in the guitar scene.
It's been a long time coming but better late than never and this is only the beginning because Guthrie's career is still at the early stages with just one solo album and the Aristocrats super power trio album still in the works. I'm planning a lot of clinic-concert tours for the remainder of this year and all of 2012.
The attendance during these tours has been rising steadily over the past few years and that last show of the tour in January culminated with nearly 1,000 people at the Berklee Performance Center in Boston on Jan 28, '11. Here is a pic of the venue around 10 minutes before the start of Guthrie's concert with the Jon Finn Group. The Guthrie Era has arrived, folks, and it's only getting started...

Finally! Guthrie really deserves this, he's been so underrated for too long. That show was such an awesome night and the turnout shows how far he's come over the past few years. I remember when I first got to Berklee and asked if anyone had hear of Guthrie and they looked at me and said "Guthrie who? You mean Woodie Guthrie? " and now I hear the Erotic Cakes album everywhere I go. Very cool! Can't wait to pick up the issue! When does it hit shelves? |

Yeah, it took a while but it's really tough to break into the scene and get noticed these days. One can only really stand out with a unique and identifiable style of one's own and Guthrie has certainly proven that he has an original musical style and voice.
The July issue will hit the newsstands in early-June. _________________ Ed Yoon

I am ready!
My moderation skills are now vastly more moderate than they were. I've studied with the Infuriating Tautologist Monks of East Hanningfield. Behold:

This isn't the photo that will be used by Guitar Player on the cover but I guess it'll be something of this variety. This one has too much glare from the guitar (despite the aged lacquer finish) and too vertical in its layout but it kind of gives you an inkling for what the cover will look like.

I'm so happy that Guthrie is finally starting to get some "official" recognition in the mainstream guitar community, not sure how much he cares about it but I think we, Guthrie fans, really needed it. Since I first heard Guthrie playing back in 2006, I had been wondering what were these American guitar magazines waiting for.
That frustration prompted me to buy 2 copies of the July issue One for the bathroom and one to keep preciously. I could be wrong but I believe he will be remembered as one of the few guitar geniuses that have ever lived, like Django or Hendrix( unless he starts selling out and dancing on stage like Steve Vai does nowadays.)
Thank you Guitar Player Magazine for being intelligent, and let's boost the sales by buying multiple copies. |
