Joel has the balls to follow Scott Henderson on a double bill. And then he more than holds his own with his unique blend of rock, fusion, jazz, classical, and pop with compositions laden with catchy hooks and complex and interesting arrangements with cool textures. Joel's a great player and I enjoyed his show immensely. For me, it's about the songs and the compositions more than mind-boggling guitar playing although Joel can also drop your jaws and make you laugh in disbelief. A fun guy to chat with as well...
Joel plays a Suhr Standard that he acquired from TM that has Mahogany body and neck with Flame Maple top in a cool Fireburst finish, African Rosewood F/B, Even C Slim neck shape, 16" radius, 6105 SS frets, Wilkinson VG-300 bridge. Joel's main amp is the OD-100 and he loved the new one I had around at the shop and used it for the gig.
Here are the pics:

Yeah, Joel sounded great. After the Guthrie gigs on Jan 19 and Jan 21, the gig I personally enjoyed the most was the Joel gig on Jan 23. I really, really like his style and the guy's a monster player with some really cool tapping chops. Guthrie and Joel were the only guys who had me breaking out in laughter of disbelief all week. It's not just the chops, but the musical ideas that they were executing that just makes you go, "Whoa!!!" Joel is a really musical player. _________________ Ed Yoon

cool, I signed up!
hey Ed did Joel do a lot of improvisational breaks or did he play through the albums verbatim? But, man, just trying to replicate those sounds live would be a difficult task on its own. |

He did a mixture of both. The solo breaks were longer (thank God! ) but the rest of the tunes were pretty much played the same straight through. They sounded very close to the recordings but a little rawer on the guitar side. I know they also used sample triggers from the keyboard for some special effects. It was really cool to see Joel stretch out on some long solos. It's that much more fun when you expect the breaks to be shorter and he keeps going and going. _________________ Ed Yoon

A bump for Joel. A great player and a truly gifted composer/songwriter. Please sign up and support this guy and get his albums:

Joel is taking the time to answer questions on the forum now. He's a guy who truly deserves more attention (like Guthrie). BTW, Guthrie is a big fan of Joel. Guthrie told me more than a few occasions how much he enjoys listening to Joel's albums. _________________ Ed Yoon
