Heh, here's a post specifically *not* about Guthrie on the Guthrie forum. A bit odd, but it is at least related:
I saw Steven Wilson again last night here in Montreal, on the second of a two-night run at a mid sized venue called Metropolis.
Much of the core of the show was the same as in Stockholm, with a few smaller variations and some cool new material, as well as a tribute solo performance dedicated to Chris Squire from Yes who passed away a couple days ago.
It's hard to judge the guitar performance of David Kilminster on its own terms, being so used to the sound of the guitar on the album and having seen Guthrie perform the material live. No doubt Kilminster is a wonderful guitarist in his own right, and at times he had a singing voice with his guitar that made the hair stand up on my arms. At other times I wish Guthrie was there! It's hard to judge it on its own though, it's just different rather than better or worse.
One thing I noticed was the difference in guitar sound. The solo sound mostly, the other sounds were very close to 'as recorded', even the Brontosaurus sounds from The Watchmaker. His lead sound had a lot more bass to it than Guthrie, to the point that when he left spaces in his solos the bottom fell out a little from the overall sound. Other than that though, great sounds from another superb player. _________________ Terje

Fantastic, man! Great to hear that you were able to hear both guys on the Wilson gig. I think Dave is a fantastic player, and there's no wonder that GG recommended him to Steven. I agree that his sound is more bass-y; he seems to be (as it appears to me) into this very round, singing sustain—being a very melodic player that he is.
