Hmmm.... Listening to the sound clips, it sounds very much like Fire Garden, which was the last Vai album that I really dug... But I'm not sure if I want to hear another album that sounds a lot like that. Steve's got his own very unique sound and style now - no doubt about that.

the album does sound like typical Vai (K'm-pee-du-wee sounds strikingly similar to Bostan Rain Melody Confused ) including a lot of experimental moments that won't appeal to everyone.

I was rather reluctant in buying this album at first but I'm liking it so far. His stuff always tend to grow on me after a couple of listens.

I got it and like it a lot. I think it may be his most complex music so far. Some really killer moments. A lot more zappaish in ways.

well, that lydian thing has become as synonymous with vai as harmonic minor has become with yngwie. not so sure if that's a good thing. Confused it's almost as though vai has painted himself into a corner of a very specific sound that he can't get out of. i think satch has a similar "problem" with the mixolydian mode. and santana's been in the dorian rut for decades...

Still on the fence on this one. The clips don't really make me want to buy it, but I may end up getting it anyway. Some friends are telling me that's pretty involving and will probably take several listens for it to really sink in.

one thing I couldn't stand about this album is all the pretentious rambling that he put on his website about each track. After all that, one would think that Vai is alluding to something new or groundbreaking in his style and composition. But at its core, there's really nothing completely new or innovative here. It's the same old Vai we know and love......or hate.

Nevertheless, I'm digging the tunes. I'm a fan of Vai's style and it's an enjoyable listen. There are still some incredible musical moments in this album....but I don't think there's enough of it to convert any Vai haters.

My conclusion: better than Ultra Zone, not quite as satisfying as Fire Garden and definitely nowhere the greatness of Alien Love Secrets.

Read this link from Vai's website:

http://www.vai.com/AllAboutSteve/postcard_040220.html

Kudos to Steve for sticking up for the rights of the artists! That's almost unbelievable although it doesn't surprise me that the record labels have so much control over the contents of an artist's work. Apple is getting a third of each song download?!?!? Evil or Very Mad

... Spot on! Vai sounds like a drugged up hippy and I often have no idea what he's on about with his pseudo-philisophical, meta-ethical, proto-hippy portentious ramblings and storys with silly names and stuff.

Pretentious indeed.

And I really am getting tired of his constant use of the lydian mode... too often he sets up the tonality by using the open E string, then proceeds to use, yep, you guessed it, lydian.

Oh, and as for the rights of the artist; don't you think they have enough money as it is?
