I just saw Guthrie play for the first time today on the Tonemerchants site. Wonderful slippery thing was pretty damn astounding. Anyhow I was wondering where this guy comes from, how old he is, who he studied with, etc. Very creative playing and lots of passion. This isnt your typical shredder. This is inspiring music. Cant wait to cop his CD.

Hi MK, welcome to the GG Forum. There's a lot of info on the GG Discussion section of this forum about what you want to know, but since you asked and you may not want to dig through all the threads, I'll answer briefly. There are a couple of Questions threads in which Guthrie responded, so you may want to look through those. Very interesting reading...

Guthrie is from UK and is now residing in Chelmsford, UK, a suburb of London about 30 miles southeast of that great historical city. I believe Guthrie recently turned 33 or it could be 32. Guthrie is mainly self-taught and has been playing since the age of 3. Yes, 3... He can't remember a time when there wasn't a guitar in his life. He was on national British TV by the age of 9. It seems that he reached the current technical proficiency by his late-teens. Mike Varney, the Shrapnel chief, wanted to fly him out from UK when he was 18 to record an album but Guthrie said that he "chickend out" and decided to stay in UK and continue honing his skills.

He is now the guitarist in Asia and is currently touring Europe with them. When he's not recording or touring with Asia, Guthrie teaches at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music (he also taught at the prestigious Academy of Contemporary Music for many years), writes monthly instructional columns for UK's Guitar Techniques magazine, gigs weekly with the jazz/fusion outfit called the Fellowship in Chelmsford, and contiues working on his upcoming debut solo album and other compositions. Being a Cornford Amps endorsee, Guthrie also conducts clinics and seminars for Cornford whenever the schedule permits.

Nope, he isn't your typical shredder at all. His creativity, inventiveness, and feel are as strong as his proficiency on the instrument. Hopefully we'll see the long-awaited debut album around mid-year.
