Over the years, I had infatuations with the following guitarists during my development as a player and just a guitar music fan:

Ace Frehley (yes, my first guitar hero!) Very Happy
Ritchie Blackmore (first serious guitar god)
Brian May
Steve Howe
Jimmy Page
Eric Clapton
Jimi Hendrix
David Gilmour
Jeff Beck
Al DiMeola (mainly his acoustic work acutally)
John McLaughlin
Allan Holdsworth
Pat Metheny
Yngwie Malmsteen
Tony MacAlpine
Joe Satriani
Steve Vai
Eric Johnson
SRV
Gary Moore
John Scofield
Mike Stern
Jim Hall
Bill Frisell
David Torn
Scott Henderson
Greg Howe
Brett Garsed
Shawn Lane
Buckethead
Mike Romeo
Ron Thal

These are the guys who just pop into my head and there are obviously many more, including acoustic players like Leo Kottke, Michael Hedges, Tim Donohue and others. So many out there, but these are the ones I grew up on and still love. So let's see some lists from you guys! Very Happy[/i]

NUmber one - and way beyond all others in terms of influencing me - is the late Michael Karoli fom Can. he's my man. I sound scarilylike him at times. God I was shell-shocked when he died.

I'll stick to influences on my playing to stop this list getting out of hand, so aside from Karoli, my main influences are:

Nile Rodgers
Jimi Hendrix
Tony Iommi
Zal Cleminson
John McGeoch
Tom Verlaine
Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo
Michael Rother
Manny Göttsching
Blixa Bargeld
Jimmy Nolen
J Mascis

I could go on...but I'll desist for your sakes!

There are definitely some common threads running through our list of faves and influences already, which is not surprising. Very eclectic! Smile

Gojiorosan, very interesting group of players you've listed there. Verlaine and Sonic Youth, I'm very aware and respectful of. Not familiar with some of those other names but I can sort of imagine based on the more famous names.

Not really a guitar players guitar list.. or maybe it is, my Dad berates me for my tastes, since he shunned the guitar in favour of banjos, ukeleles and bazookis.

Lowell George
Steve Vai
Joe Satriani
Jan Cyrka
Jennifer Batten
Bob Weir
Jerry Garcia
Frank Zappa
Joe Walsh
Mike Kerneally
Ronny Jordan
Eric Johnson
Wes Montgomery
Dweezil Zappa
Jimi Hendrix
Django Reinhardt
Phillip John Lee (flamenco guitarist) he's giving lessons in london.. tempting.

From the earliest

Hank Marvin
Vout Steinhous
Bert Weedon
Django
Eddie Lang
George Harrison
Hendrix
Clapton
McLaughlin
Zappa
Beefheart
Nick Drake
Stefan Grossman
Beck
Metheny
Benson
Pass
Albert Lee
Robben Ford
Martin Taylor

I don't like to think of guitarists per se, I would much rather think of musicians so I would have to include

Duke Ellington
Nelson Riddle
Earth Wind and Fire
Steely Dan
Jamoriquai
Stevie Wonder

and shit loads of classical/orchestral music. I find it hard to find the time to listen to up and coming guys, although obviously I have heard and seen Guthrie. There's just so much good stuff out there that you just can't wade through it all.

I might just add as a proud Yorkshireman that of course McLaughlin and Holdsworth are fellow Yorkies. It's in the water you know.

Benson but not Wes, Dave?

Or did you just forget him like I forgot Robert Hampson and all the blues players who affect my dobro playing?
