alright, here it is. I'm not sure about the bassline...I cant figure out how to make the first measure sound right. Then again maybe I've just listened to it 1000 times and it sounds wrong to me.
Also in the image i posted, there should be a tie from the last note in the 2nd measure to the first note in the 3rd. But that has been fixed in the powertab.
Enjoy

Mostly looks like the relevant lydian scale over the maj7(#11) chords, and dorian over the m9 - with chromatic notes here and there. |

Well a Maj7#11 (or +11 however you want to write it) is pretty indicative of the Lydian scale.
The Maj7#11 contains the intervals:
1 3 5 7 9 #11 (the #11 is the same as the #4)
The Lydian Scale contains the intervals:
1 2 3 #4 5 6 7
You could sharpen or flatten the 2 or 6 and come up with another scale.
Using the same practice the min9 chord contains 1 b3 5 b7 9 (2)
There are a lot of scales that would fit these notes (three within the major modes).
Shapiro if you are just starting to learn music theory I recommend Guthrie's first book (Creative Guitar 1) as it has a guitarist orientated introduction to theory. |

Ahaaaa
Alright, thanks for explaining that for me. I wouldnt say I am completely new to music theory, but i am definitely just getting the hang of modes.
So correct me if I'm wrong,
Since min9 has
1 2 b3 5 b7
You need a scale that contains all those (a minor one)
So could you use natural minor, minor pentatonic, or dorian, since phrygian and lydian have a b2? And then the question is which one do you choose?
if guthries book talks about all of this then I think i will get it, I am really looking for a good way to learn all of this stuff and get more comfortable with it. |

I fucked up a bit sorry, I said there were three in the Major modes, there aren't- I forgot about the 9. (Frankus probably saw my previous post, tutted and muttered 'noob' )
For major modes you could use Aeolian (minor) or dorian. As you mentioned you could strip away some notes and use the m.pentatonic.
With a chord like a min9 it's very common to use the additional notes from a whole bunch of scales, e.g. using the natural and flat 6ths, the flat 5th (blues scale).
Really its more like 'the notes that are really strong and you should include are the notes of the chord, use whatever the fuck else you like |
