I know Guthrie uses these (as well as Shawn Lane) and am well aware that they are the best for fast precision playing.

What is the difference between the red and black picks. Which does Guthrie use? And while we're at it, which did Shawn use?

Guthrie uses the red Dunlop Jazz III XL. You can see it on this photo of his Root Beer Suhr Standard:

It's a larger version of the regular Jazz III. To my understanding, the red is nylon while the black is a different material, but I could be wrong. They do feel and sound different. I used to use the smaller Jazz III in red, then they changed the material mix and it didn't feel right to me. Eric Johnson also uses the old Jazz III reds. I use the Dunlop Ultex 1.14 now. For accurate speed, Jazz III is about as good as it gets with its sharp pointed tip.

I've only seen Jazz Is in blad and the corners aren't rounded and you get a harsher sound.

I still get on with the Jazz III normal size a lot better.

I meant black... I've about 10 Jazz Is at home.. One seriously old jazz 2 from around '93. 20 odd Jazz III smalls and 10 Jazz III XLs.

The Jazz Is have a square profile and a more rounded tip, so it sounds clankier and fast picking isn't as easy.

You do realise that Shawn has passed away?

Anyway, I have 20 Dunlop Jazz III's (red), don't suppose anyone has any black ones to trade? Laughing

Apparently according to this the blacks are made of stiffo nylon

If they're like the Jazz II blacks I've got I wouldn't bother.

I used to use the black Jazz IIIs, but then I found the Dunlop Tortex 1.14mm. This pick is a bit thinner, but still plenty thick enough for fast picking, and has a much better grip then the Jazz III, IMO.
You should check it out.

I like these the best. Great for serious funk playing as well as for single note stuff. Very good all around pick.

You're the guy with the Tomo clips from TGP, aren't you? Seems like we share a similar taste in guitarists:)

Yeah Tomo's cool as hell and a great player. I'd never heard him before so I wanted to hear what he sounded like. He mentioned he had some live tapes and was asking for help to get them converted to mp3/CD so I told him I'd do it. He sent me his training materials, his DVD, his CDs, etc. etc. and the tapes. I was totally hooked up. I think I've stolen like 10-15 of his funk grooves already and haven't even gotten to disecting any of the solos. Wink

Yes, he's a great guy. I just ordered some of his CDs, and he threw in lots of free stuff. Can't wait to try some of those funk grooves, I have a couple of funk lesson DVDs, but I believe this will be a step up from that!

Are you guys talking about Tomo Fujita from Berklee Music? He's a great player!

Cheers
