Ed, I agree... it is totally up to the sound or mood you are trying to evoke...
BTW, you mentioned Emanuel - are you referring to the great Tommy Emanuel from Australia? I've had the great pleasure of meeting Tommy and watch him perform on numerous occassions... a true gentleman!

Yes, that's who I was referring to. I need to get more into him. From what little I've heard and seen, he does seem like a great talent. _________________ Ed Yoon

Actually, probably a fitting addition to this discussion, and a good introduction to Tommy Emanuel, check out Tommy's site and then click on the "Tommy's Tips" and "Tommy's Philosophy" link...
Absolutely right - Tommy Emmanuel is an master on guitar.
I've seen many of his solo acoustic shows, and everytime he simply blows the crowd away....a great mix of chops, humour, showmanship, and just great songs.
Everybody should own at least one Tommy CD....check out Endless Road for a good introduction.

That's great, I think Tommy is just starting to get well known in the U.S.
The first time I saw Tommy was when I was a 17 year old kid (20 years ago now!) sneaking into my local pub, trying to look like I was meant to be there and all - I must have looked about 15 years old
He was playing both electric (Tele) and acoustic with his brother Phil (who is also an awesome guitar player). I remember thinking to myself "Wow, this is my local pub, can't get much better than this - beer, woman and great music!".
years later I was having lessons with Jim Kelly (the Australian Jazz/session guy) who happened to be playing in The Tommy Emmanuel Band as his second guitarist, and was exposed to some great musicianship by being dragged along by Jim to help carry some of his gear.
