I accidentally discovered these picks just a few months ago.. I really like the material alot...got the 1.14s and they totally replaced the regular Fender Xtra Heavys I'd normally not be able to find The Rhino says it all..

Well it's been a while since I've posted on this forum (though I check every week on the goings-on...).

I've actually SWITCHED to using the Dunlop Jazz 208's.....the LARGE
very black 2.0 mm picks that actually have the rounded edges and I've
never been happier.

About a year ago, I was at a shop in my area trying out a few guitars,
and I didn't have a pick on me. The guy next to me, a jazzbo, let me use
one of his...a Dunlop 208. All of sudden my playing was smoother and
faster then ever before. Somehow this pick made my picking EASIER....
I was a bit surprised, asked him what they were and bought a few right
then and there. Went home and noticed something else....these picks reduced some of the high-end in my attack. Smoothed it out, and ALL this
from a tiny piece of plastic.

So I compared the Ultex with the 208 and found that the 208 made my
overall sound better. So my thought was....am I LOSING my mind!!!! It
can't make that big a difference, but somehow IT DID! I've been pushing
the 208's to some of my advanced students who are Yngwie/Petrucci fans
and they've noticed a BIG difference.

BUT.....The Ultex are still my pick of choice for acoustic playing. The 208's
SUCK for acoustics.....go figure.

2mm Crikey!

I'm worried about going above 1mm. I don't like them thin enough to flex at all, but I do notice when the 'knife edge' starts to wear-off, so I think those would be too beefy for me. I guess the best idea is to go to a music shop and buy one of eveything they have, to do a thorough test

They're not cheap, but extremely good. A stiffer variant of classic Fender Heavy. Lasts longer, and has a beautiful, crisp clear sound. Play it with the round end a la Henderson/Landau and you get a bassy but snappy sound. I'm set for several years with my stash.

If U can find them. Try them out!

i use jazz III picks red, used to be the black one but i dont think they still make the black Jazz IIIs ... but its all good , its so far the best that suits my style of attacking the strings and the way i hold picks ...

Hey, great news! Dunlop will have the Ultex Jazz III and they expect to start shipping this in early-April!

Hey shredizalive...for a while I've been using standard Fender Xtra Heavy picks..then about 3 months ago I found Dunlop Ultex 1.14s...sweet! But then today online I ordered some strings and randomly found these Dunlop 207s. They looked awesome just from the photo So as I wait for the picks, have you tried the 207s which look more like the Fender standard shape/rounded tip as apposed to the 208s which have a pointed tip? I can't wait for these things...

I had a friend who used to stamp and dremel tool bronze alloy picks for me back in the day. He always put a sharp taper on because thats how he machined the stamp. I've had to hand cut my picks down ever since. I use the tortex 1mm but cruising the dunlop site I noticed they make a Sharp that's pretty close to my taper. Anyone tried them?

I tried the Tortex Sharps.....and found out I didn't like them anywhere near as well as I thought I would, since the taper was too drastic. I always wanted Dunlop to make a tortex equivalent to the Jazz III XL shape.

holy Jazz 3!..hehe...i would love to try that new Jazz III ULTEX...but is that as heavy or as hard as the red jazz III picks???... coz i like my picks as heavy as the red ones... if ULTEX have the same heaviness i have to have one then.

I have been waiting for Ultex Jazz 3's for about 3 yrs... I am so excited, I can hardly contain myself... Unfortunately here we are early april and no listings on the music gear sites... shame...

Oh yeah, Hey powerslave, dunlop does make the tortex jazz 3's, they're purple, I think they are the H3's.. I used to use them until I tried the regular Jazz 3's, they are a little more slippery.. but try the Ultex Jazz 3's when they come out., the regular one's have such a great attack, and an awesome high end.. also you can pull artificial harmonics like no one's business... at least that's what I thought..

Wow!!! I gotta check out those Jazz III ULTEX!!!

I switched to the Jazz III reds (inspired by Guthrie and EJ) and noticed an improvement in my picking. I tried the Ultex 1.0 mm (standard shape) and found it quite stiff (compared to a Fender Heavy, for example)

Anyway, I used to have jazz lessons from the late Ike Isaacs (played with Stephan Grapelli), and one of the first things he said on my first lesson was:

"Better to use a pick than a shovel!"

Being a play on words for the meaning of "pick", he was basically telling me it is better to have a job as a guitar player than it is to have a job digging ditches in the street with a shovel...

Sumis mentioned above that he plays with the stub end of a standard shaped pick, and I must admit I used that technique for many, many years ago after watching and listening to Robben Ford. I found that by using a pick in that way it can improve your articulation and sensitivity immensely, and can fatten up the sound quite nicely! Now with the Jazz III's I find using the pick in that fashion a bit awkward, maybe because the Jazz III is smaller and the shape at the butt end (versus the pointy end) seems different to a standard shaped pick.. dunno...


BTW, does any one know what is the standard width of a Fender Heavy pick??? Is it 1.00 mm or less than 1.00 mm?

Do the Jazz III ULTEX come in different widths?
