So if a carrier frequency on the Moogerfooger can be selected... and any note produced on a guitar string is a composite of harmonics, then with a bit of physics you can really broaden the pallet by knocking out target harmonics using the difference selection. It'd be interesting to see if knocking out on overtone actually translates the fretboard in some easily remembered manner.

I think I'm going to have to get one just for that.

I think most people who know me from the Intermusic forums would agree that I'm far better at getting excited about some obscure bit of maths to do with music theory or electronics (on a good day) than I am at either explaining it or applying it to my playing.

Ring modulators work by combining 2 signals, in the case of the Moogerfooger, the signal is generated in the pedal and the two signals are diffed or summed. So you get the combination of the two signals or the difference. I'm not sure how much control you get over that.

If you listen to the solo on the bassment CD for Chromazone, to my ears it appears that the pedal is summing the signal of the guitar and a constant wave that's not part of the western music scale.. (to be honest I just love the bit where the whammy pedal kicks in and it meows like a very angry moggy)

I was toying with the idea of getting a theramin and freeding that signal into a ring modulator, but I think that'd be too tricky to control and picking a dodgy note and summing the signals means everything is pushed out a bit. BUT equally the signals could be diffed and the signal skewed in the same way... I'd have to buy one to find out Sad

I need to spend some time with this monstrosity. I do have one with the expression pedal that I got specifically for Guthrie to use during the NAMM week shows here. I know that he needed the expression pedal to do whatever it was that he was doing. It's a pretty wild-sounding thing and he uses it right. I'm not sure what I'd be able to do with one. Embarassed
