Here is a clip from a section of a song called Gone Too Far from the new Asia album, "Silent Nation". I believe it's the outro section and Guthrie mixes in some very tasty phrasing, searing bends, and burning runs that never sound out of context of the music.

Yeah, this is really commercial "adult rock" kind of stuff that we fusion/shred aficionados may sneer at, but Guthrie advised me that it's actually challenging to work out something like this because he has to figure out what fits and leave out the jazz notes (outside) and the "weird noises" that he normally favors. Say what you will about the music, but great playing however you look at it! Listen to the vibrato that I now find instantly recognizable as Guthrie's, the intonation on the bends and melodic phrasing. As I posted on another thread, I feel it serves as a good lesson on how to play in a more conventional mainstream pop/rock format.

that sounds like a strat to my ears, but what do i know? i do know that it's great playing!!!!! very sweet and feel-laden. i understand what you mean now about the phrasing and vibrato thing. guthrie could play the alphabet song and it'd sound awesome as far as i'm concerned.

As you're fond of saying, Ed, he's got a lot of "headroom" in his playing. It's all so technically perfect and it sounds like he's not even breaking a sweat. Love the vibrato, BTW. Best of all, he's playing well within the context of the song - very meoldic.

Ah, yes, the "headroom" factor in Guthrie's playing. If there is one thing that Guthrie does not have in his playing, it's that straining kind of thing you hear in other players trying real hard to play fast or get the notes in.

Some technically inclined players try to hammer in as many nails on a wooden board as fast as they can. So what do you have? A wooden board dotted with a bunch of nails. Rolling Eyes I tend to see Guthrie building a nice piece of furniture or a beautiful house with his tools and his "carpentry".

Definately sounds like single coils. Wish they had the guitar a bit higher in the mix during the outro. Beautiful stuff though. Yeah, when Guthrie decides to step it up a notch in his runs it's sounds so effortless and it always fits what precedes it and what comes after. Never sounds like a stock fast lick thrown in. Some of his playing reminds me of Vinnie Moore. I haven't heard a lot of Vinnie but I remember a beautiful sense of melody and an effortless technique.

Thanks Ed.

Could this be.......... "The Suhr"?

BTW, I also vote that this is the famous Suhr we're hearing. The first solo sounds like the bridge pickup and the long second solo sounds like he switched to the neck.

Guthrie advised me that the band had rented a '57 Goldtop Les Paul that EVH had used before for the sessions (another "Karma" guitar for sure Wink) and that he remembered using that guitar on this track. I asked him if he was sure that it was this LP on the solo and he advised me that he was quite sure that's what he used on this song. I told him, tonally, I hear Blackmore, Gilmour and a bit of Yngwie on this who are all Strat players. He said that he'll listen to it again and try to remember exactly what he used on this solo.

I just picked this album up, and Guthrie REALLY shines, there is some absolutely brilliant stuff here that yanks on all the emotional chains...I highly recommend listening to the solo in the song "I will be there for you". This guy is seriously from another universe

Mr. Paul C himself! Shocked Welcome!

Yes, those are the juicy tones of the might MK50 for sure. I was listening to Guthrie play that amp in the studio during the Asia sessions and couldn't believe the juicy yet tight tones that he had coming out through the studio monitors. Did Guthrie pretty much stick with MK50 for the entire album?
